Job summary

ProMedical is seeking a Locum Consultant in General Medicine to support a busy NHS medical service in the West Midlands. This is a full-time locum contract running for 6 months, starting 5 August 2026, with 40 hours per week and on-site delivery. Pay is negotiable and the role is offered under PAYE.

The post requires leadership of the department, senior clinical oversight, and delivery of high-quality patient care across the medical pathway, in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
• CCT in General Internal Medicine or CESR and inclusion on GMC Specialist Register (or eligible).
• Significant NHS experience at Consultant level.
• Experience managing acute and complex medical patients in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Provide consultant-led care for patients with a wide range of acute and complex medical conditions.
• Lead daily ward rounds and provide senior clinical decision-making for inpatients.
• Assess, diagnose, and develop comprehensive treatment and management plans.
• Support effective patient flow through timely reviews, discharge planning, and collaborative working.
• Participate in acute medical take and ambulatory care services where required.
• Work closely with specialty teams, nursing staff, pharmacists, therapists, and the wider MDT.

You will play a key leadership role within the department, providing senior clinical oversight, supporting patient flow, and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care across the medical pathway.

What You'll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-led care for patients presenting with a wide range of acute and complex medical conditions
• Lead daily ward rounds and provide senior clinical decision-making for medical inpatients
• Assess, diagnose, and develop comprehensive treatment and management plans
• Support effective patient flow through timely reviews, discharge planning, and collaborative working
• Participate in acute medical take and ambulatory care services where required
• Work closely with specialty teams, nursing staff, pharmacists, therapists, and the wider multidisciplinary team
• Supervise, mentor, and support junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals
• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, teaching, and service improvement initiatives
• Ensure the highest standards of patient safety and evidence-based medical practice

What We're Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in General Internal Medicine, Acute Internal Medicine, or equivalent (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
• Significant NHS experience working at Consultant level
• Experience managing acute and complex medical patients within a hospital setting
• Strong leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
• Experience supporting junior medical staff and contributing to departmental development
• Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
