Abbeywell Surgery, a GP practice spanning Nightingale and Abbey Mead, is seeking a permanent part-time phlebotomist to join the clinical team. You will perform venipuncture, label and prepare samples, and record notes after each collection, reporting to the Practice Nurse Co-ordinator.

Domiciliary visits may be required; chaperoning and INR testing are possible if trained. A phlebotomy qualification and a full UK driving licence with access to a car are required.

Permanent part-time phlebotomist post in the clinical team at Abbeywell Surgery, a GP practice spread across its Nightingale and Abbey Mead sites, reporting to the Practice Nurse Co-ordinator. The work centres on venepuncture, labelling and preparing samples requested by GPs and nurses, and recording clinical notes after every sample taken. Domiciliary visits are needed on occasion, and the post includes chaperoning and INR testing where trained. A phlebotomy qualification and a full UK driving licence with access to a car are required.

What the job involves

• Carrying out venepuncture
• Labelling, processing and managing laboratory samples requested by GPs and nurses
• Managing own clinic across the two sites
• Requesting pathology tests
• Recording accurate clinical notes after every sample taken
• Working within own scope of practice and referring to nurses or GP when needed
• Chaperoning patients
• Carrying out INR testing if trained
• Taking domiciliary samples when needed
• Keeping electronic records updated, accurate and in line with record keeping standards
• Following practice policies on infection control, confidentiality, health and safety and data protection
• Respecting patients' privacy, dignity and rights

Qualifications

• GCSE or equivalent
• Phlebotomy qualification

Experience

• Experience as a phlebotomist
• Experience working as part of a team supporting others

Skills & knowledge

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, such as Outlook, Word and Excel
• Understanding of equality and diversity, information governance, data protection and confidentiality policy and legislation
• Basic understanding of medical terminology and patient pathways
• Basic skills operating IT systems and computers
• Communicating effectively and sensitively
• Personal initiative and ability to prioritise own workload

Checks & eligibility

• DBS check
• Full UK driving licence and access to own car

Nice to have

• Previous experience of work in general practice
• Knowledge of the EMIS clinical system
