Job summary

Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in Exeter seeks a Band 6 Practice Educator to join the Day Surgery Unit at Heavitree. You will lead education, support induction and develop staff competencies across theatre teams with a focus on safe, high-quality perioperative care.

You will collaborate with Wonford theatres, theatre management and external stakeholders to foster continuous learning, mentorship and clinical excellence within a developing day surgery service.

Qualifications

• HCPC-registered ODP or NMC-registered Nurse with substantial operating theatre experience.
• Excellent communication, coaching and leadership skills.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and CPD standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate education, training and competency programmes for theatre staff, nurses, ODPs, healthcare support workers and students.
• Support induction, orientation and preceptorship of new staff to achieve required competencies for day surgery and theatre practice.
• Facilitate learning opportunities in theatres and anaesthetics.
• Assess, monitor and document staff competencies, maintaining training records and development portfolios.
• Promote evidence-based practice and support implementation of current national guidelines, policies and quality improvement initiatives.
• Identify learning needs through appraisal, clinical observations, audits and incident reviews.
• Deliver teaching sessions, simulation training, skills workshops and mandatory training relevant to theatre practice.
• Support students, apprentices and newly qualified practitioners with mentorship and coaching.
• Collaborate with lead education team in Wonford theatres, theatre management, multidisciplinary teams, educational universities and external stakeholders.
• Contribute to service improvement projects, clinical governance activities, patient safety initiatives and audits.
• Ensure compliance with professional standards set by NMC, HCPC, AfPP and other regulators.
• Promote a positive learning culture encouraging reflective practice and clinical excellence.
