Job summary

Marchant Recruitment are representing a secondary school in Crawley, West Sussex seeking a Performing Arts Technician to support music, drama and performing arts departments. The role focuses on setting up and maintaining lighting, sound and stage facilities for lessons, rehearsals and events.

You will work with teaching staff to understand production needs, prepare spaces, ensure safety, and assist during evenings or after-hours performances.

Qualifications

• Previous performing arts, theatre, stage, sound or lighting experience is desirable.
• Experience working in a school or educational environment would be advantageous.
• Familiarity with audio equipment, microphones, speakers and basic sound systems.
• Basic knowledge of stage lighting and performance-space setup.
• Practical skills and confidence troubleshooting common technical issues.
• Strong organisation and attention to detail.
• Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and support students appropriately.
• Flexibility to support occasional school events outside standard teaching hours, where agreed.
• Good awareness of equipment safety, cable management and safe lifting practices.
• A proactive approach to identifying technical problems and finding practical solutions.
• Willingness to undertake safeguarding checks and school-specific training.
• The right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

• Set up and test sound equipment, microphones, speakers and audio systems for lessons and performances.
• Assist with safe setup and operation of stage lighting and basic lighting-control systems.
• Prepare performance spaces, stages, seating and backstage areas for rehearsals and events.
• Support teachers and students with technical requirements for drama, music and performing arts activities.
• Assist with installation and removal of staging, props, scenery and technical equipment.
• Check equipment before and after use and report faults or damage.
• Maintain an organised inventory of technical equipment, cables, props and other resources.
• Carry out routine equipment checks and arrange repairs where necessary.
• Ensure cables, stands, staging and other equipment are stored safely.
• Support the preparation of school concerts, drama productions, assemblies and other events.
• Follow risk assessments, manual-handling guidance and relevant health and safety procedures.
• Assist with the safe storage of equipment and ensure performance areas are left tidy after use.
• Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pupils and other school employees.
• Provide practical technical assistance during rehearsals and performances as required.
