Job summary

Jobtailor in Leeds seeks an experienced engineering manager to lead a group of engineers through regular one-to-ones, coaching and career conversations. You will own growth, wellbeing and performance while building psychological safety and trust within the team.

You will lead hiring, onboarding and retention, manage capacity for delivery pods, and partner with Product Managers and Tech Leads to align pod scope.

Qualifications

• Proven line-management of engineers with regular feedback and career conversations.
• Experience forecasting capacity and allocating resources in agile teams.
• People-first leadership, coaching, wellbeing and inclusive team-building.
• Comfort working in a matrix environment.
• Track record in capacity planning, resource allocation, skills mapping, flow and unblocking in a sustainable delivery environment.
• Confidence leading in a fast-moving, AI-native environment.
• Strong partnership skills with Tech Leads and Product Managers.
• Background in software engineering.
• Experience in a regulated or professional-services environment.
• Familiarity with modern DevOps and agentic development, such as Azure DevOps and Claude Code.

Responsibilities

• Line-manage and develop engineers through regular one-to-ones and feedback.
• Own growth, wellbeing and performance of direct reports.
• Build trust and psychological safety within the team.
• Lead hiring, onboarding and retention for managed employees.
• Own capacity and resource allocation for delivery pods.
• Identify and elevate capacity, skills, dependency and resourcing risks.
• Support engineers in pods and provide feedback to managers.
• Partner with Product Managers on pod scope and sequencing.
• Support agile ways of working with Agile practitioners.
• Partner with Tech Leads, Product Managers and fellow managers.
• Help pods adopt AI-native delivery and ensure quality review.
• Integrate three former teams into one engineering function.
