Job description

Payroll Specialist - 12 Months Full Time Contract

This role is responsible for specialist payroll support in the delivery of the UK and Crown Dependency payrolls. The role manages critical payroll activities to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of the monthly payroll, such as running the gross to net calculations, providing input to change projects (both business and government-led), and administering legislative documentation such as P60 and P11D. The role also involves effective management of escalations for the tier 2 payroll team, providing guidance and support through to resolution.

To be successful as a Payroll Specialist, you must have experience with:

  • Extensive payroll administration and support experience at an expert level.
  • Decision-making that considers policy, legislation, operational performance, and team deliverables.
  • Proven success in driving process and procedural change initiatives, from conception to implementation.

You may be assessed on key skills relevant for success in this role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking, digital and technology skills, as well as job-specific technical skills.

Purpose of the role

To manage payroll functions, including calculating employee pay, withholding taxes, and deductions, maintaining accurate payroll records, and resolving complex pay queries.

Accountabilities
  • Processing payroll for hourly, salaried, and commissioned employees, including tax calculations, contributions, withholding, and payouts.
  • Maintaining employee payroll records and troubleshooting issues.
  • Providing guidance and support to employees on payroll matters, including salary calculations, overtime, bonuses, and commissions.
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory filings and managing responses to government notices related to statutory obligations.
  • Handling payroll statutory reporting and liaising with relevant tax authorities.
  • Performing activities timely and to high standards, continuously seeking improvement.
  • Applying in-depth technical knowledge in payroll.
  • Leading or developing technical expertise in the area, acting as an advisor as appropriate.
  • Collaborating with other teams and functions, taking responsibility for operational results, and escalating policy breaches.
  • Embedding new policies and procedures to mitigate risks.
  • Influencing decision-making within the area of expertise.
  • Managing risks and controls, ensuring compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Understanding how the payroll function integrates within the organization.
  • Making evaluative judgments based on factual analysis.
  • Resolving problems using technical experience and guidance from precedents.
  • Communicating complex or sensitive information effectively.
  • Acting as a contact point for stakeholders outside the immediate team and building a network externally.
