Job summary

A Payroll Officer is sought by a well-established local authority via Hays to support the delivery of accurate payroll and pension services for a broad workforce. You will process weekly, monthly and elected member payrolls and maintain records, ensuring compliance with legislation and internal procedures.

Responsibilities include producing reports, handling payroll queries, and ensuring timely payments while maintaining confidentiality and data protection.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs (A-C) including English Language and Maths.
  • Minimum 2 years' payroll experience in a large organisation.
  • Experience delivering payroll and pension services.
  • Experience using payroll/finance systems such as Sage or Total.

Responsibilities

  • Processing weekly, monthly and elected member payrolls within deadlines.
  • Supporting payroll, pensions and employee expenses administration.
  • Processing payments through BACS and maintaining payroll records.
  • Assisting with pension administration and statutory payroll requirements.
  • Be a key contact for managers on payroll queries.
  • Preparing payroll reports and providing financial information.
  • Ensure payroll services align with organisational objectives.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation and pension regulations.
  • Provide cover within the payroll team when required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of payroll information in line with data protection.

Job description

Hays are recruiting on behalf of a well-established local authority for a Payroll Officer to join their busy finance team. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience within a large and diverse organisation, supporting the delivery of payroll and pension services for a wide range of employees.

Your new role

As Payroll Officer, you will support the delivery of accurate and timely payroll and pension services, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and internal procedures.

Key duties will include:

  • Processing weekly, monthly and elected member payrolls within agreed deadlines.
  • Supporting the administration of payroll, pensions and employee expenses.
  • Processing payments through BACS and ensuring payroll records are maintained accurately.
  • Assisting with pension-related administration and statutory payroll requirements.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for managers and departments regarding payroll queries.
  • Preparing payroll reports and providing financial information as required.
  • Helping to ensure payroll services are delivered efficiently and in line with organisational objectives.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation, terms and conditions of employment, and pension regulations.
  • Supporting service continuity by providing cover within the payroll team when required.
  • Ensuring confidentiality is maintained, and all payroll information is handled in accordance with data protection requirements.

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this role, you will have:

  • Five GCSEs (A-C) or equivalent, including English Language and Maths.

AND

  • A minimum of 2years' payroll experience within a large, multi-disciplinary organisation, including:
  • Delivering payroll and pension services.
  • Using payroll or finance systems such as Sage, Total or similar packages.
  • Gathering data and producing reports.

OR

  • 3 years' relevant payroll experience if you do not hold the above educational qualifications.

You will also require:

  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to work to strict deadlines.
