Part Time - Principal Design Engineer - (Substations Protection & Control) – Contract Role (12 Months) – Remote - £90 per hour Umbrella Pay
Overview
The main function of the role is to engineer the control and protection designs for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV. This includes work on new substations, refurbishments, extensions, etc.
The role also encompasses General, Planning, and Procurement responsibilities for the delivery of substation projects.
Planning Responsibilities:
- Upon contract award, liaise and coordinate contract requirements with Project Manager, customer, external suppliers, and other Departments at the earliest opportunity.
- Establish the design content of work packages and the design resource to meet required time scales, through development of detailed engineering design plans.
- Effectively control, update, and report on progress throughout the contract, providing estimates to complete and highlighting potential resource issues to the Design Manager / Project Manager.
Procurement Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with other Departments to specify and quantify equipment/materials to maximize benefits.
- Report scope variations to the Design Manager / Project Manager, indicating implications, and proceed only after approval.
- Prepare instructions for materials and tools required for site, passing information to the Project Manager.
- Specify test certificates and/or operation & maintenance manuals as part of technical specifications or purchase requisitions.
Design Responsibilities:
- Identify relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with international standards and legislation.
- Design with regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures, producing Designer Risk Assessments as necessary to comply with CDM regulations.
- Review contract documentation, establishing the scope of work, and highlight differences with tendered requirements.
- Attend and contribute to design review and close-out meetings, ensuring timely actioning of items.
- Coordinate with Engineers, Designers, and Draughtspersons on drawings requirements.
- Initiate and approve all drawings for customer/sub-contractor interface.
- Prepare installation and commissioning packages aligned with site schedules.
- Develop special Test Specifications and Procedures for inspection and testing.
- Ensure accurate final records are prepared and submitted to the client, including 'As Installed' site drawings and documentation.
Person Specification
- Education: HNC in Electrical Engineering or higher.
- Experience: Liaising with customers and suppliers, UK industry experience (preferably Grid), overall design and specification of electrical power systems, calculations demonstrating design integrity.
- Desirable: TP141 Settings experience.
