FiLiA is a feminist women's rights charity, which aims to build sisterhood and solidarity (locally, nationally and internationally), to amplify the voices of women (particularly those less often heard or purposefully silenced) and to defend women's human rights.

We organise and host the FiLiA conference and support human rights campaigns in the UK and globally. Our work with women and our follow-up research has highlighted the fact that women’s differing needs and lives are not being recognised in policies and processes, and that we continue to live in a male-dominated and male-served society.

FiLiA is now working to provide women with the support required to ensure their voices are heard in national and local policy forums, so that policy makers understand the real world impacts of their policies and how they can improve the lives of women.

We are now looking for a Parliamentary and Public Affairs Officer, to support the interim Head of Policy and Head of Public Affairs until the end of 2025 (with the possibility of extension through 2026 and beyond, dependent on funding).

We are looking for bids from consultants who can fulfil the role, supporting FiLiA to build its authority, credibility and visibility within the policy and campaigning sphere, while maintaining its feminist ethics, values and approach. The role will be on a self-employed consultancy basis. Hours can be flexible but we envisage about 20 hrs per week at £25ph until end 2025.

What we're looking for

  • A feminist who agrees with FiLiA's feminist ethics, values and approach.
  • Some understanding of the UK political and parliamentary system.
  • A good understanding of the political landscape to help inform decision making and planning.
  • A quick thinker, able to take advantage of opportunities when they arise and to anticipate risks and mitigate them.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to write concisely and quickly.
  • Strong IT skills, including the ability to quickly learn how to use different platforms and software (including political monitoring and CRM platforms).
  • Ability to work and progress work autonomously and provide timely updates to the team to ensure our work is joined-up.

Key responsibilities of the role

Parliamentary Monitoring & Horizon Scanning:

  • Monitor the UK Parliament website and material from FiLiA’s political monitoring partner to maintain a continuous forward look of debates, committee meetings and questions which are relevant to issues that FiLiA is focusing on to support grassroots women to influence national policy.
  • Summarise relevant Parliamentary activity and draft concise fortnightly summaries for FiLiA colleagues and volunteers.

Policy Research & Writing:

  • Draft high-quality written content, including briefings for Parliamentarians, correspondence to MPs and ministers, and senior civil servants.
  • Understand policy and legislative developments and write summaries of Parliamentary proceedings for internal and external use.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Assist in building and maintaining relationships with Parliamentarians and other stakeholders from organisations with similar aims and values.
  • Support the organisation of meetings and events to raise FiLiA's profile.
  • Set up and track engagement activities on a CRM.
  • Work closely with the team to ensure cohesive understanding of priority policy issues and messaging.
  • Occasionally represent FiLiA at internal and external meetings.

If you have the skills, experience and passion, please email an up-to-date CV to info@filia.org.uk with a covering letter (no more than 750 words) detailing how you can deliver this function for us and what you will bring to the role.
