Job summary

Wigan & Leigh College is seeking a Painting and Decorating Lecturer to teach across practical and theory-based programmes. You will help learners develop practical techniques, trade knowledge and professional behaviours to prepare for further study or employment.

You’ll bring industry experience, a relevant qualification, and a commitment to safeguarding and high teaching standards. A teaching qualification or willingness to attain one is expected.

Qualifications

• Diploma/qualification in Painting & Decorating or related construction discipline.
• Current or recent industry experience in painting and decorating.
• A recognised teaching qualification, or willingness to work towards one.
• Level 2 English and maths, or willingness to achieve these.

Responsibilities

• Teach Painting and Decorating across practical and theory-based programmes.
• Help students develop trade knowledge, techniques and professional behaviours.
• Use industry experience to make learning current and relevant.
• Demonstrate safe and effective use of tools, materials and workshop processes.

Painting and decorating is a skilled trade.

Students need more than a list of techniques. They need to understand preparation, accuracy, finish, safe working, customer expectations and the pride that comes with doing a job properly.

As our Painting and Decorating Lecturer, you’ll help learners build those skills.

You’ll teach across Painting and Decorating provision, using your industry experience to bring learning to life. You’ll help students develop practical techniques, trade knowledge and professional behaviours that prepare them for further study, apprenticeships and employment.

You may already be an experienced lecturer. You may be a painting and decorating professional from industry, employment, self‑employment or your own business, and ready to move into education.

Either route is welcome.

What matters is that you can explain practical skills clearly, set high standards and support learners to grow in confidence. If you’re moving from industry into teaching, we’ll support you to develop your teaching practice and work towards a recognised qualification.

What you'll do

• Contribute to curriculum development, programme review and quality improvement.
• Support Open Evenings, recruitment activity and college events where required.

What you'll bring

• A relevant qualification in Painting and Decorating or a related construction discipline.
• Current or recent industry experience in painting and decorating.
• Strong practical knowledge of painting and decorating techniques, materials and tools.
• Experience teaching, training, coaching, mentoring or supporting others.
• A recognised teaching qualification, or willingness to work towards one.
• Level 2 English and maths, or willingness to achieve these within an agreed timeframe.
• Confidence explaining practical and technical skills clearly to learners.
• Good understanding of workshop practice, safe working and industry standards.
• Experience in further education, apprenticeships or workplace training would be helpful.
• Experience supporting learners with practical trade skills would be an advantage.
