Responsibilities include carrying out preparation work such as making walls good prior to decoration, completing minor repairs to surfaces and structures, and undertaking additional minor repair works as needed. The position requires the safe and effective use of all relevant tools, equipment, and access apparatus in line with safety guidelines, alongside erecting access equipment, plant, and temporary screening when required to protect both the environment and people, in accordance with current Health & Safety standards. The individual will be responsible for monitoring decorating material stock levels and requesting replenishment as necessary, as well as performing all aspects of painting and decorating, including the removal of paint using appropriate equipment. Duties also include preparing work areas for decoration, which may involve safely moving heavy items such as fridges, filing cabinets, and tables. The role requires the ability to interpret and work from instructions, drawings, and specifications relevant to the trade without supervision. Additionally, the individual must be fully conversant with, qualified to use, and able to maintain all relevant hand and power tools and workshop equipment safely and effectively, consistently delivering a high standard of workmanship as directed by the team leader or works supervisor.

Main duties

The main duties of this role include responding promptly to verbal, written, and reactive tasks, and carrying out all painting and decorating work to a high standard while providing support and input into projects as required. The individual must notify their line manager of any complaints or discrepancies and ensure all works are completed within the approved budget. Painting and decorating equipment must be utilised efficiently, kept clean, and reused wherever practical to avoid unnecessary wastage. The role also requires attending site inductions, reading and understanding the site file, and signing all relevant receipt pages to confirm adherence to specified method statements and risk assessments. The individual must attend training courses in line with Mitie's QHSE policies and procedures and complete all painting and decorating tasks in a safe manner, wearing all required PPE at all times to minimise risk to themselves and others. Uniforms, safety boots, and name badges must be worn at all times. Accurate time sheets must be completed and submitted promptly, and local procedures must be implemented and followed as they are issued. Additionally, the role involves liaising with site management and key personnel regarding building‑related issues.

Qualifications

The role requires candidates to hold a recognised qualification or have a minimum of three years of checkable experience in painting, with a full driving licence preferred but not essential. It is also preferable for applicants to have completed a recognised apprenticeship. The successful candidate must be organised, able to meet deadlines, self‑motivated, and a strong team player. They should be conversant with relevant legislation and compliance requirements and possess good knowledge of all aspects of Health and Safety. The role also demands strong motivational skills, a positive “can‑do” attitude, and excellent customer service abilities. Additionally, the individual must be capable of carrying out all duties associated with the role of a painter and decorator.

Health and Safety responsibilities

The Health and Safety responsibilities of this role include following all Group and company policies and procedures at all times and reporting any apparent deficiencies in systems of work or equipment. The individual must use all work equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with the training provided. Additionally, they are required to report any QHSE issues to their line manager and/or through the divisional incident reporting system.
