Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
- Lead on assessing, planning, and implementing high-quality critical care, evaluating care options for patients in line with Trust values and objectives.
- Be the nurse lead in deterioration or resus situations, coordinating the nursing team to delegate and prioritize care.
- Lead on complex clinical care for patients within their area.
- Support deteriorating children in other hospital areas to facilitate safe, speedy transfers to PHDU, e.g., initiate NIV.
- Manage patients with central venous access devices and arterial lines, including assessment and management.
- Provide excellent assessment skills to monitor patient conditions and identify signs of deterioration.
- Plan daily care effectively and adapt in urgent situations, e.g., leading staff in RSI preparations.
- Display leadership skills, support colleagues, and escalate concerns when necessary.
- Ensure safe custody, maintenance, and administration of medication per Trust policies.
- Promote a safe therapeutic environment, adhering to infection control, health & safety legislation, and Trust policies.
- Coordinate discharges and transfers, ensuring timely and safe processes.
- Manage patient flow and bed management effectively and safely.
- Deliver high-quality end-of-life care following national pathways, providing holistic palliative and terminal care.
- Provide evidence-based clinical advice to staff and patients.
- Understand and implement clinical escalation procedures.
- Participate in clinical governance, risk management, and uphold high standards of care.
- Ensure team adherence to safeguarding policies.
- Collaborate across disciplines to deliver comprehensive care from admission to discharge.
- Coordinate specialist functions and make clinical decisions as appropriate.

Management and leadership:
- Manage staffing and rotas to ensure safe practice levels.
- Act as shift coordinator when appropriate.
- Ensure staff compliance with care protocols.
- Take responsibility for the ward/department in the absence of a manager.
- Participate in on-call rotations as needed.
- Lead and manage clinical teams, ensuring effective communication and resource management.
- Contribute to staff induction, appraisals, and recruitment.
- Lead specific projects and manage budgets for cost-effectiveness and quality.
Communication and relationship building:
- Apply Trust values in all relationships.
- Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, and multidisciplinary teams.
