Job summary

Secondment opportunity or fixed term contract (1 year)

Full-time: Band 6 £37,338 - £44,962 per annum pro rata

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a paediatric dietitian to join our friendly, proactive, and supportive paediatric dietetic team, based at Milton Keynes University Hospital. This post offers a chance to develop your knowledge and skills by working with experienced paediatric dietitians and the wider multidisciplinary team.

You should be enthusiastic, with excellent communication and time management skills, flexible, and strongly committed to teamwork.

The successful candidate will work closely with the multidisciplinary paediatric team, providing specialist dietetic care to children as inpatients and outpatients. The role may include covering general paediatric clinics and inpatient duties on the children's ward. Specific caseloads will depend on the individual's experience and skill set.

Main duties of the job

We support staff development through clinical and leadership CPD, external education, and career development opportunities, backed by our dedicated Therapy Practice Education team.

  • To provide dietetic services for paediatric inpatients and outpatients as part of the paediatric team.
  • The postholder will be an autonomous practitioner, acting as a specialist in paediatric dietetics, and may support dietitians working in adult services if needed.

Job responsibilities

We seek candidates with good interpersonal and time management skills, flexibility, and a strong team commitment. The successful candidate will work with the multidisciplinary paediatric team, providing specialist dietetic care to children, both inpatients and outpatients. Responsibilities include covering general paediatric clinics and inpatient duties, with caseloads tailored to experience and skills.

  • Develop and maintain high standards of knowledge and practical experience in general dietetics and provide specialist expertise in paediatrics.
  • Manage a diverse caseload effectively.

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Identify and discuss practice or system issues with the line manager to support caseload management.

Educational:

  • Proactively identify and address educational needs of patients, carers, and staff, including medical, nursing, and catering teams.

Organisational:

  • Ensure personal practice meets professional standards.
  • Manage your caseload with support, adjusting plans as needed.

Committee membership:

  • Represent the Dietetic Department at internal and external meetings.

Person Specification
Qualifications and knowledge
  • Degree or equivalent in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • HCPC registration as a dietitian
  • Evidence of CPD at postgraduate level
  • Strong therapeutic and clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge of national guidelines relevant to clinical practice
  • Evidence-based clinical practice for various conditions
  • Attendance at BDA paediatric specialist modules (MSc or CPD level)
  • Membership of the British Dietetic Association
Experience
  • Post-registration experience across clinical areas
  • Ability to manage complex caseloads independently
  • Experience supervising students and junior staff
Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including report writing
  • Ability to apply various treatment approaches appropriately
  • Strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills
