Actalent in Stockton-on-Tees is seeking a Packaging Engineer to design and deliver robust, cost‑effective packaging solutions that support safety, quality and operational efficiency across the supply chain.

You will lead development, collaborate with suppliers and cross‑functional teams, and evaluate materials and technologies while driving continuous improvement through root cause analysis and adherence to packaging processes.

Qualifications

• Experience in an industrial packaging/material handling equipment context.
• Self-starter with minimal supervision.
• Proficient in 3D CAD for design reviews.
• Excellent communication; able to influence across levels.
• Strong project management; able to lead initiatives.
• Balance cost, performance and sustainability in solutions.
• Familiar with global supply chains.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development and optimisation of packaging solutions meeting safety, quality, delivery and cost targets; provide specifications to suppliers.
• Collaborate with suppliers, logistics providers and cross-functional teams to define packaging requirements and ensure implementation.
• Approve packaging for product lines; drive solutions to minimise transportation damage.
• Evaluate packaging materials, automation technologies and machinery; report results.
• Drive continuous improvement focusing on damage reduction and safety via root cause analysis and risk-based decisions.
• Adhere to the packaging development process and execute key packaging phases.
• Support supplier visits and travel to the Desford facility for training purposes.

Description

As a Packaging Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing and delivering robust, cost-effective, and sustainable packaging solutions that support safety, quality, and operational efficiency across the supply chain.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Lead the design, development, and optimisation of packaging solutions for a wide range of products, ensuring alignment with safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets; providing detailed guidance and specifications to suppliers.

Collaborate closely with suppliers, logistics providers, and cross-functional teams to define packaging requirements and ensure successful implementation

Following procedures in approving all packaging for a specific product line. Drive solutions that minimize the risk of transportation damage

Evaluating packaging materials, automation technologies and machinery, and reporting the results regularly.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on damage reduction and safety, using root cause analysis and risk-based decision making

Adheres to the packaging development process and assists in executing key packaging phases.

Support supplier visits and travel to the Desford facility for occasional training purposes.

Required Qualifications:

Able to demonstrate significant experience gathered within an industrial packaging/material handling equipment context.

Self starter who is able to work with little to no supervision

Is capable of utilising 3D CAD software in order to perform design reviews

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence, challenge, and collaborate effectively across all levels

Has strong project management experience and can provide examples of project leadership.

A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation

Ability to balance cost, performance, and sustainability considerations when developing solutions

Familiarity with global supply chains
