Job summary

National Grid plc in the UK is seeking an Operational Technology (OT) Engineer to support reliability, security and performance of OT systems across interconnector sites at Viking Link. You will manage OT assets, lead fault diagnosis and implement changes in operational environments.

Based on site in Bickerfen, within an hours commute of the interconnector, the role works with engineering, cyber and policy teams, with opportunities to contribute to major projects and ongoing standardisation

We're looking for an Operational Technology (OT) Engineer to join our Operations team and support the reliability, security and performance of the operational technology systems that underpin our interconnector network.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering, networking and cyber security. You'll be responsible for managing and maintaining OT systems across our converter stations and control room environments, ensuring they remain secure, compliant and operationally resilient.

Working closely with operational, engineering, cyber and policy teams, you'll lead technical investigations, implement system improvements, support major projects and provide specialist knowledge across our OT estate.

The role is based on site at our Vikinglink Interconnector in Bickerfen, so you would need to live within an hours commute of site for the role.

What you'll do

• Manage the performance, availability and security of operational technology, networking and cyber assets across interconnector sites.
• Lead fault diagnosis, root cause investigations and resolution activities for OT systems and infrastructure.
• Design, implement and support hardware, software and network changes within operational environments.
• Develop and maintain maintenance strategies, procedures and technical documentation for critical systems.
• Oversee patch management, system updates, antivirus management, backups and access control reviews.
• Monitor asset health and system performance, identifying opportunities to improve reliability and resilience.
• Support cyber security initiatives and ensure systems remain compliant with regulatory requirements, including the Network and Information Systems (NIS) Regulations.
• Lead or support testing, commissioning and integration activities for new equipment and system upgrades.
• Manage change processes and ensure assets are maintained throughout their lifecycle.
• Provide technical oversight and support to contractors and specialist suppliers.
• Support site recovery, restoration and incident response activities for critical operational systems.
• Act as a technical subject matter expert for OT systems, collaborating with engineering, cyber security and operational teams.
• Support assurance, audit and regulatory compliance activities.
• Contribute to standardisation and continuous improvement initiatives across the interconnector portfolio.
• Provide technical support across IFA, IFA2, NSL and Viking Link, with opportunities to support future interconnector projects.

What you'll need

• Experience working with Operational Technology environments, industrial control systems, networking infrastructure and/or cyber security technologies.
• Knowledge of systems such as SCADA, monitoring systems, protection systems, building management systems, HVAC controls or industrial networks.
• Experience investigating and resolving technical faults in a critical operational environment.
• Understanding of cyber security principles and asset lifecycle management.
• Experience managing system upgrades, changes and technical projects.
• Knowledge of maintenance strategies, asset management practices and system performance monitoring.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience using asset management systems such as Maximo, Ellipse, IFS or Ultimo would be advantageous.
• HNC/HND, NVQ Level 4, apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Information Technology, Telecommunications or a related discipline.
• Full UK driving licence.
• IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
• Experience within the utilities, power transmission, renewable energy or critical infrastructure sectors.
• Industry certifications relating to networking, cyber security or operational technology.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £47,442.00 - £56,173.50 per annum – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
