Job description

Lewisham Greenwich NHS Trust is a leading healthcare provider dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care. Our orthopaedic team is at the forefront of innovative surgical techniques and comprehensive patient management. We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Orthopaedic Scrub Nurse/ODP to join our dynamic team. The core purpose of this role is to primarily work within Orthopaedics however at times due to the demand of the service, we will require you to work in a variety of specialities.

As an experienced Orthopaedic Scrub Nurse/ODP, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the patients within the operating theatre. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality care and support throughout the perioperative environment. You will also support the planning and preparation of the environment which will involve communicating with the wider service team.

Main duties of the job

Lead the operating list assigned from start to competition, escalating any concerns in a timely manner to the floor-coordinator

Prepare the operating room for a range of cases, ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment and staff are available for the day ahead.

Scrub and circulate for a variety of minor to complex procedures within your NMC/HCPC scope of practice this will include elective, trauma and emergency procedures.

Communicate effectively with the surgical team and the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Support with post-operative care as required and

Ensure accurate documentation is recorded and handed over

Participate in training and mentoring of new staff and students as required.

Organise the specialistic equipment required for the procedures ahead of time and communicate this with the relevant internal and external parties

Complete clinical audits to provide compliance of the perioperative environment

Job responsibilities

As a member of the team, participates in establishing a positive working environment in which patients receive a high standard of care delivery

Personally deliver a high standard of care to patients and participate in assessing, planning and evaluation of individualised patient care

Act as team leader where required and clinical role model at all times.

Ensure that all patients are cared for in a safe environment and maintains the safety and well-being of patients, staff and visitors in line with Health and Safety guidelines

Personally acts within and ensures adherence to all Trust and Departmental policies and procedures

Participates in the care, custody and administration of medicines in accordance with Trust and local policy

Assist the Theatre and Recovery Co-ordinator in providing advice, guidance, support and professional leadership for all clinical staff in the theatre department.

Assist in developing the department philosophy and framework of care in line with unit/organisational and beliefs/values

Ensure the provision of advice, support and health information to patients and their carers in order to promote a health-based service.

Ensure workload of colleagues does not jeopardise safe standards of practice and initiate action if necessary.

Participate in the daily checking and maintenance of essential equipment

Transports/manages people and/or items such as equipment or specimens safely and to time consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.

Maintain accurate and legible records of all clinical and legal documentation to include accident / incident reporting, with regard to HCPC/NMC statutory and Trust polices.

Ensures all aspects of clinical care including interventions and investigations are performed, assessed and reported upon in a timely fashion and in a manner consistent with legislation, policy and procedures.

Liaise with all members of the multi-professional team to ensure that care is assessed, planned, delivered and evaluated within a multi-professional framework, in the interests of the patient, and that care is communicated to all team members.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Qualified ODP with HCPC registration or Qualified Nurse with NMC registration and relevant anaesthetic course
  • Mentorship course or willingness to undertake training within three months of appointment
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years' experience working in theatres at Band 5 level
  • Experience working at Band 6 level
Knowledge
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to plan, problem solve and prioritise
  • Experience of audit and research based practice
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with others
