Job description

Join to apply for the Optics Process Development Engineer role at Fives.

Scope of the role:

The Process Development Engineer will work as part of a multi-skilled team responsible for optical process development, testing, and the development of high precision machinery at Cranfield Precision in Bedfordshire. The role includes visiting customer sites globally for machine installation, upgrades, process development, and technical support.

Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Develop processes for Cranfield Precision's range of precision sample grinding machines.
  • Demonstrate processes during machine acceptance and verification tests at Cranfield and customer sites.
  • Provide training to customers on grinding machines and software.
  • Manage new machine builds and R&D projects as per schedule.
  • Coordinate effectively with project teams on technical matters.
  • Complete reports and documentation at customer sites.
  • Maintain stakeholder communication and represent Cranfield Precision positively.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to improve customer service.
  • Assist with commissioning and setup of ultra-precision machine tools.
  • Support optical machine customers with process, aftermarket, and upgrade requests.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by management.
  • Adhere to ISO9000-2008 quality standards.
Key Skills Requirements:
  • Engineering qualification in Mechanical or Optical disciplines or relevant industry experience.
  • Ability to operate CNC systems and understand G-code.
  • Solution-oriented, goal-focused professional.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
  • Proficiency with Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Full UK driving license and passport, with willingness to travel internationally.
  • Flexibility for extended international assignments up to 6 weeks.
Specialist Skills:
  • Ability to interpret optical, mechanical, and electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of optical metrology systems like Taylor Hobson PGI, white light interferometry, and CMM.
  • Understanding of ultra-precision machine systems and data measurement.
  • Experience with machine calibration methods.
Desirable Knowledge:
  • Experience with optical manufacturing, metrology instruments, and grinding wheel technologies.
  • Familiarity with Cranfield Precision grinding machine range and R&D setups.
  • Experience with CAD software such as NX, SolidWorks, or RhinoCAD.
