Job summary

Universal Quantum Ltd. in the United Kingdom is seeking an Optical Engineer to join our Hardware Engineering Group and advance quantum computing platforms.

You will design, align, test, and integrate high-precision optical subsystems for trapped-ion and related quantum technologies. The role requires deep hands-on optical engineering experience, strong foundation in geometrical optics and laser systems, and proficiency with Zemax, Code V, MATLAB, Python, and related tools.

Qualifications

  • Degree or higher in Optical/Phon/related technical discipline is required.
  • Around 10 years of hands-on optical engineering experience in R&D or high-precision environments.
  • Experience with free-space optical alignment, beam delivery and opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • Hands-on lab instrumentation including beam profilers, wavemeters, interferometers, power meters, and detectors.
  • Ability to define optical requirements, write test plans and document results clearly.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication for cross-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Provide optical engineering support to a team developing commercial quantum computing systems.
  • Design, specify, assemble, align, troubleshoot, and characterize optical subsystems for trapped-ion experiments.
  • Integrate high-precision optical and fibre-optic subsystems into higher-level systems and maintain reliability.
  • Develop optical test methods, collect performance data, and improve robustness, alignment stability, and throughput.
  • Support electro-optical controls, beam delivery, laser alignment, and optical diagnostics for robust operation.
  • Collaborate with Electronics, Mechanical, Physics and Quantum Engineers.
