Job description

We are excited to offer this Ophthalmic Technician Apprenticeship, providing the successful candidate with a rewarding and structured pathway into healthcare, alongside recognised training and development opportunities within the field of Ophthalmology. Join our dynamic and ambitious multidisciplinary team, which includes 15 consultants, advanced non-medical nurse practitioners, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmic technicians and ophthalmic healthcare assistants. This apprenticeship role will involve developing the skills to work independently, with appropriate supervision within the Ophthalmology clinic. Some decision-making will be required as competencies are achieved. Full theoretical and practical training and support will be provided throughout the apprenticeship programme to enable the successful candidate to build a strong foundation for a career in Ophthalmology.

Main duties of the job As an Ophthalmic Technician Apprentice, the post holder will work within ophthalmology outpatient clinics, developing the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to provide high-quality, individualised care to patients. As part of a structured Level 3 training programme, the apprentice will work towards achieving the Level 3 Agored Certificate in the Fundamentals of Ophthalmology. Under supervision and as part of this structured training programme, they will learn to undertake a range of diagnostic tests and clinical procedures, which may include visual acuity testing, instilling eye drops, OCT and retinal imaging, visual field testing, pachymetry, tonometry and biometry. The role will support the apprentice to progressively build confidence and independence as competencies are achieved, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to contribute to effective patient care and service delivery.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
