Job Opportunity: Band 3 Ophthalmic Healthcare Support Worker

The Ophthalmology Department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting for a Band 3 Ophthalmic Healthcare Support Worker.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assist registered nurses and senior clinical staff in planning, delivering, and evaluating patient care. Your role involves supporting nursing staff to maintain high standards of care, health, and well-being through assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation within the unit under indirect supervision.

About Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye and visual system diseases. With an aging population, eye health services are increasingly important, particularly for age-related conditions like macular degeneration, which can be effectively managed if detected early.

Candidate Requirements

• Previous experience in an ophthalmic unit for at least twelve months, with the required competencies achieved.
• Ability to undertake ophthalmic assessments, including visual acuity, ocular pressure measurements (iCare), diagnostics, and Schirmer’s Test (post-competency).

Role Responsibilities

You will work alongside qualified professionals and participate in planned care delivery. The role involves extensive use of VDU equipment, ophthalmic diagnostics, and web-based systems such as Medisight. The position may require long periods of sitting or standing.
