Job summary

Astute People invites applications for an Operations Technician at a biomass power plant in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The role involves safe operation, DCS monitoring of fuel, steam and power output, and emissions management within strict permit conditions.

You will operate and maintain the plant on a shift pattern, including days and nights, and support outages with the maintenance team. This permanent position offers a competitive salary, healthcare, and pension matching.

Responsibilities

• Operate the plant safely and efficiently during normal running, start-ups, shutdowns and emergencies.
• Monitor the plant through the DCS to maintain fuel supply, steam pressure and power output.
• Monitor plant emissions to comply with the Environmental Permit, reporting issues to the Shift Manager.
• Carry out front-line maintenance, plant inspections, fault-finding and fault reporting.
• Support the maintenance team during outages and shutdowns.
• Help develop operating procedures.
• Work within the company's safe systems of work and relevant legislation.

Job description

Astute's Power Team has been exclusively appointed by a leading O&M contractor to recruit an Operations Technician for the biomass power plant it operates in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The plant generates around 40MW of power from wood waste pellets.

This permanent role offers an industry-competitive salary plus a healthcare plan, pension matched up to 6% and a bonus opportunity. The plant runs 24/7, 365 days a year, so you'll work a mix of day and night shifts.

Responsibilities of the Operations Technician

• Operate the plant safely and efficiently during normal running, start-ups, shutdowns and emergencies
• Monitor the plant through the DCS to maintain fuel supply to the boiler, steam pressure and power output in line with contractual obligations
• Monitor plant emissions to comply with the Environmental Permit, reporting any issues to the Shift Manager
• Carry out front-line maintenance, plant inspections, fault-finding and fault reporting
• Support the maintenance team during outages and shutdowns
• Help develop operating procedures
• Work within the company's safe systems of work, SHEQ systems and relevant legislation

Required qualifications and experience

• 3+ years' process operations experience in power generation (biomass, Energy from Waste, coal, CCGT or nuclear), petrochemical or oil and gas, or as a marine engineer in the Merchant Navy or Royal Navy
• Level 3 engineering qualification (C&G, ONC, NVQ or SVQ) or higher
• Control room experience
• Experience working with SCADA, PLC or DCS systems
• Willingness to work rotating day and night shifts

Desirable experience

• Steam plant experience, including boilers, heat recovery steam generators and turbines
• Completed engineering apprenticeship
• IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent health and safety qualification
