Job summary

Fidra Energy in Doncaster is seeking an Operations Technician to support the safe, reliable operation of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Thorpe Marsh site during their shift. You will work under the Shift Team Leader, ensuring procedures, safety standards, and performance targets are met.

The role requires willingness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays, with on-site responses to emergencies.

Qualifications

• Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a shift-based operational setting.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems and safety procedures.
• Experience with SCADA or control systems.
• Ability to make decisions under pressure and manage incidents effectively.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and operate the BESS plant via SCADA and control systems per dispatch instructions.
• Carry out routine checks, inspections, and system status verification.
• Respond to alarms, faults, and abnormal conditions, escalating where needed.
• Assist in system start-up, shutdown, and switching operations.
• Perform first-line maintenance and support planned/unplanned activities with engineering teams.
• Log defects and work completed in maintenance systems accurately.
• Support risk assessments, permit controls, and safe systems of work.
• Maintain shift logs and clear handovers to incoming shifts.
• Contribute to data collection for performance monitoring and reporting.
• Work with Shift Team Leader and broader operations team; participate in toolbox talks and training.

Job Purpose / Overview

The Operations Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Thorpe Marsh site during their assigned shift.

Working under the direction of the Shift Team Leader ensuring compliance with operational procedures, safety standards, and performance targets the Operations Technician maintains the asset availability, grid compliance and operational excellence.

Operating Environment

This is an important role within the site operational structure, ensuring that the site operates safely, reliably, and in alignment with commercial and grid requirements

The candidate must be willing to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays and have the ability to respond to emergency situations on-site.

This role reports to the Shift Team Leader.

Principal Accountabilities

Operations & Monitoring

• Monitor and operate the BESS plant via SCADA and control systems in line with dispatch instructions
• Carry out routine operational checks, inspections, and system status verification
• Respond to alarms, faults, and abnormal conditions, escalating where necessary
• Assist in system start-up, shutdown, and switching operations

Maintenance Support

• Perform first-line maintenance activities and basic fault-finding
• Support planned and unplanned maintenance activities alongside engineering teams
• Ensure accurate logging of defects and work completed in maintenance systems
• Assist with isolations and permit-to-work processes as required

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Comply with all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures
• Support safe systems of work, including risk assessments and permit controls
• Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the site
• Report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly

Reporting & Documentation

• Maintain accurate operational logs and shift records
• Provide clear and concise handovers to incoming shifts
• Support data collection for performance monitoring and reporting

Team Support

• Work collaboratively with the Shift Team Leader and wider operations team
• Participate in shift briefings, toolbox talks, and training activities
• Contribute to a positive safety culture and continuous improvement initiatives

• Authorised Person / Senior Authorised Person (AP/SAP) status
