  • Operate plant locally during normal running, start-up, shutdown, testing and abnormal or emergency conditions in accordance with approved procedures and Shift Manager instructions.
  • Oversee biomass fuel receipt, storage, transfer and feeding activities, including supervision of third-party deliveries and safe management of fuel-handling hazards.
  • Support control of steam, water, air, electrical, emissions-control, ash-handling and other auxiliary systems required for safe and reliable generation.
  • Diagnose plant faults, make equipment safe and, where trained and authorised, carry out minor rectification or first-line maintenance.
  • Raise and update defects in the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and maintain clear shift logs covering plant status, process changes, defects and planned work.
  • Apply, remove and prove process and mechanical isolations when trained and authorised, in accordance with the site Safe System of Work and Permit to Work arrangements.
  • Undertake routine operational checks and functional testing of emergency and non-emergency plant and equipment.
  • Assist maintenance and engineering teams during planned maintenance, defect rectification, outages and plant return-to-service activities.
  • Follow the competency-based operator training programme, completing practical tasks, technical learning, assessments and authorisations within agreed timescales.
  • Develop competence in DCS monitoring, alarm response, plant control and control-room communications, progressing to authorised control-room duties when competence has been demonstrated.
  • Support the development and review of operating procedures, risk controls and supporting documentation, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Report safety or environmental concerns promptly, control hazards within authority, and work as part of the shift team to minimise operational, health, safety and environmental risk.
  • NVQ Level 3, recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in engineering, process operations or a relevant technical discipline; substantial relevant plant experience may also be considered.
  • Experience in power generation, biomass, energy-from-waste, petrochemical, process manufacturing or another continuous-process environment is desirable.

  • Knowledge or experience of fuel handling, boilers and steam systems, turbines, generators, electrical distribution or Balance of Plant systems is advantageous.
  • DCS or control-room experience is desirable but not essential; the role holder must have the aptitude and commitment to progress through competency-based training.
  • Understanding of Safe Systems of Work, plant isolations, safety documents and Permit to Work arrangements.
  • Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, technical drawings and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Confident using IT systems for shift records, defect reporting and operational information.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills in English, including concise shift handovers and accurate operational records.
  • Logical problem-solving ability, situational awareness and willingness to work flexibly across plant areas.
