Job summary

px Group is recruiting for a Shift Operations Technician to join our team at Tees REP biomass power station. This field-based role supports safe, reliable and environmentally compliant operation, with on-the-job training and regular reviews.

You will carry out field rounds, monitor plant parameters, and work with fuel handling, boiler, turbines and associated systems. The role requires shift work and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in engineering, process operations or a relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience in power generation or biomass is desirable.
  • Understanding safe field operations, plant inspections and fault escalation.
  • Knowledge of fuel handling, boilers, steam systems or turbines is advantageous.
  • Ability to progress through competency-based training.
  • Understanding Safe Systems of Work and Permit to Work arrangements.
  • Ability to read operating procedures and P&ID drawings.
  • Clear written and verbal English communication.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out field rounds and inspections across fuel handling, BOP and plant systems.
  • Monitor equipment conditions and respond to alarms and leaks.
  • Operate plant during startup, shutdown and abnormal conditions per procedures.
  • Supervise fuel receipt, storage and handling with third parties.
  • Support control of steam, water, air, emissions and auxiliary systems.
  • Diagnose plant faults and perform minor rectification where trained.
  • Raise defects in CMMS and maintain shift logs.
  • Apply process and mechanical isolations as trained and authorised.
  • Conduct routine checks and functional testing of plant equipment.
  • Assist maintenance during planned outages and returns to service.
  • Complete competency-based operator training, including control-room duties.
  • Develop procedures and risk controls; contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Report safety or environmental concerns promptly.

The Opportunity

We are now recruiting for a Shift Operations Technician.

The Shift Operations Technician is a field-based member of the shift team responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally compliant operation of Tees REP, a biomass power station.

You’ll be supported with personalised on the job training, coaching, mentoring and twice-yearly development and performance reviews to help maintain & develop your contributions and competence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out field rounds, plant inspections and local operations across Fuel Handling Systems, Balance of Plant and auxiliary systems, the CFB boiler, and the Steam Turbine Generator and associated systems.
  • Monitor equipment condition and process parameters; identify abnormal conditions, alarms, leaks, vibration, noise or deterioration; and take safe first-line action within competence and authority.
  • Operate plant locally during normal running, start-up, shutdown, testing and abnormal or emergency conditions in accordance with approved procedures and Shift Manager instructions.
  • Oversee biomass fuel receipt, storage, transfer and feeding activities, including supervision of third-party deliveries and safe management of fuel-handling hazards.
  • Support control of steam, water, air, electrical, emissions-control, ash-handling and other auxiliary systems required for safe and reliable generation.
  • Diagnose plant faults, make equipment safe and, where trained and authorised, carry out minor rectification or first-line maintenance.
  • Raise and update defects in the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and maintain clear shift logs covering plant status, process changes, defects and planned work.
  • Apply, remove and prove process and mechanical isolations when trained and authorised, in accordance with the site Safe System of Work and Permit to Work arrangements.
  • Undertake routine operational checks and functional testing of emergency and non-emergency plant and equipment.
  • Assist maintenance and engineering teams during planned maintenance, defect rectification, outages and plant return-to-service activities.
  • Follow the competency-based operator training programme, completing practical tasks, technical learning, assessments and authorisations within agreed timescales.
  • Develop competence in DCS monitoring, alarm response, plant control and control-room communications, progressing to authorised control-room duties when competence has been demonstrated.
  • Support the development and review of operating procedures, risk controls and supporting documentation, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Report safety or environmental concerns promptly, control hazards within authority, and work as part of the shift team to minimise operational, health, safety and environmental risk.
Minimum Requirements
  • NVQ Level 3, recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in engineering, process operations or a relevant technical discipline; substantial relevant plant experience may also be considered.
  • Experience in power generation, biomass, energy-from-waste, petrochemical, process manufacturing or another continuous-process environment is desirable.
  • Practical understanding of safe field operations, plant inspections, local equipment operation, fault identification and escalation.
  • Knowledge or experience of fuel handling, boilers and steam systems, turbines, generators, electrical distribution or Balance of Plant systems is advantageous.
  • DCS or control-room experience is desirable but not essential; the role holder must have the aptitude and commitment to progress through competency-based training.
  • Understanding of Safe Systems of Work, plant isolations, safety documents and Permit to Work arrangements.
  • Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, technical drawings and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Confident using IT systems for shift records, defect reporting and operational information.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills in English, including concise shift handovers and accurate operational records.
  • Logical problem-solving ability, situational awareness and willingness to work flexibly across plant areas.
  • Ability and willingness to attain site-required authorisations and licences, which may include Forklift Truck operation.
  • Able to work safely in an operational power-station environment, including shift work and field duties, subject to applicable site requirements.
