Job summary

BT Group in Chippenham is seeking an Operations Shift Engineer to support a resilient and secure global data network on a 24x7 shift pattern. The role requires 2nd line incident support, strong Cisco routing knowledge, and experience with DDI, Palo Alto and Nokia firewalls, plus WAN optimisation and ITIL familiarity.

You will work onsite, collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to sustain service availability and security.

Qualifications

• CCNA level or equivalent with experience configuring and operating Cisco routers.
• Experience with DNS, DHCP, IPAM, Palo Alto and Nokia firewall technologies.
• Experience with WAN optimisation technologies and devices.

Responsibilities

• Resolve technical and service issues across a complex global IP network, coordinating with internal teams and ensuring clear communication throughout.
• Produce accurate, timely operational and performance reporting to support service availability targets.
• Provide 2nd line incident support, including fault prioritisation, diagnostics, and escalation of complex issues to operational management.
• Maintain strong working relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders while ensuring compliance with security, regulatory, and safety policies.
• Deliver Service Operations activities, ensuring 24/7 coverage on a shift rotation basis and aligning services to customer requirements.
• Support tactical improvements by contributing to process enhancements, proactively learning new network technologies, and assisting in refining support systems and procedures.
• Maintain accurate operational, contractual, and security documentation to support effective service delivery and compliance.

About the role

In this role, you will support the delivery of resilient and secure services by maintaining and supporting the customer's secure global data network. Working as part of a small team of multi-skilled specialists, you will help ensure the availability, performance, and resilience of a high profile secure service underpinning critical operations.

Through proactive operational management and effective issue resolution, you will contribute to the stability and protection of key systems, reinforcing customer confidence and BT's position as a trusted partner.

The successful candidate will need to be eligible for Government Security Clearance to DV Level and must be in possession of a British passport only (dual passports holders will be ineligible for this level of clearance).

What you’ll be doing

Essential Skills / Experience

• Technical proficiency at CCNA level or equivalent with experience in the configuration and operation of Cisco routers.
• Experience with DDI platforms (DNS, DHCP, IPAM), Palo Alto and Nokia firewall technologies.
• Experience with WAN optimisation technologies and devices.

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Excellent understanding of IP data networks, including WAN technologies, protocols, and firewall principles.
• Good experience working with cryptographic network devices.
• Ability to manage workload independently and deliver against agreed targets.
• Good working knowledge of the ITIL framework.
