On Train Cleaner

Location: Birmingham New Street

Type: Full-Time Permanent, 37 hours/week

As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains operates approximately 1,300 train journeys daily, serving over 60 million passengers annually across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.

We are committed to providing a safe and reliable train service by investing in our trains, stations, and staff. We are seeking an On Train Cleaner to join us on a full-time permanent basis at Birmingham New Street.

This role is essential to ensure the train environment meets customer expectations. You will perform delegated cleaning duties following established procedures.

What does the job involve?

1. Following instructions from the Depot Manager.
2. Performing cleaning duties as per standards set by the VCI, including litter picking, graffiti removal, sticker removal, toilet cleaning and replenishment, bio-hazard cleaning, and sharps disposal.
3. Using specialized cleaning chemicals and equipment.
4. Managing materials and equipment provided for tasks.
5. Completing audit sheets as required.
6. Disposing of rubbish appropriately.
7. Taking units to Outstations as needed.
8. Reporting non-conformances to supervisors or managers.
9. Replacing full bin liners and relining bins on trains.
10. Applying seat reservation labels, campaigns, or promotional materials as directed.
11. Ensuring compliance with the Environmental Management System aligned with ISO14001 standards.
12. Carrying out activities safely, reporting incidents immediately.
13. Interacting professionally with passengers and train crew.
14. Topping up screen washer bottles.
15. Wearing the provided uniform and maintaining a professional appearance.
16. Performing cleaning duties at various locations, including mess rooms and toilets on a rotational basis.
17. Inspecting official walking routes at Northampton River sidings and reporting defects.

Skills and Experience Needed

• Knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of special chemicals.
• Good communication skills, both written and oral.
• Driving license is advantageous for operating company vehicles.
• COSHH awareness, PTS, DP, and bio-hazard/sharps certification.
• Training in emergency train evacuation, HOT protocol, customer awareness, and safety awareness certifications.
• Ability to attain and maintain competence in operating hand points.
