Job summary

SSA Recruitment is seeking an experienced SHE Advisor to join the Essex team on a major infrastructure earthworks project. This hands-on, site-based role supports Safety, Health and Environmental activities across civils and heavy plant operations.

You will work with site management, subcontractors and the project team, conducting inspections, RAMS reviews, toolbox talks and incident investigations while driving continual SHE improvements and a strong safety culture.

Qualifications

• NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent H&S qualification.
• Experience in construction, civils, earthworks, infrastructure or heavy plant environment.
• Strong understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation.
• Experience with RAMS, risk assessments, inspections, audits and incident investigations.
• Experience around heavy plant, vehicles and construction operations.
• Understanding of environmental management within construction or infrastructure environment.
• Experience monitoring and managing subcontractor SHE compliance.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the confidence to challenge unsafe practices.
• Proactive approach to SHE with a strong focus on continuous improvement.
• Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day SHE advice, guidance and support to site and operational teams.
• Carry out regular site inspections, audits and safety tours.
• Monitor compliance with company and project SHE procedures and requirements.
• Review RAMS, risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
• Support the management of risks associated with heavy plant, vehicles and people/plant interfaces.
• Assist with the investigation of accidents, incidents, near misses and environmental events.
• Monitor and manage subcontractor SHE performance.
• Deliver and support inductions, toolbox talks and SHE briefings.
• Identify hazards and ensure appropriate corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
• Maintain accurate SHE records, reports and documentation.
• Support environmental controls relating to earthworks, waste, pollution prevention and material management.
• Assist with monitoring SHE KPIs and performance trends.
• Attend SHE and project meetings, providing updates on key risks and performance.
• Work closely with Site Managers, Engineers, Supervisors, Plant Managers and operatives to promote a strong SHE culture.
• Support the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives across the project.
• Ensure compliance with relevant UK Health & Safety and Environmental legislation.
• Promote the company's commitment to safe and sustainable earthmoving.
