Job summary

Amey Ltd is recruiting for an On-Site Electrician at HMP Buckley Hall in Rochdale. The role involves delivering planned and preventative maintenance, diagnosing faults, and performing replacements and testing to BS 7671 standards within a custodial environment.

The position requires BS 7671 18th Edition (17th Edition with upskilling), knowledge of electrical systems and relevant regulations, and the ability to work independently while maintaining accurate records.

Qualifications

  • BS 7671 18th Edition certification required; 17th Edition with upskilling considered.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems and the Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • Experience with planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain clear records; comfortable working at height.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned and preventative electrical maintenance to keep essential systems safe, compliant and operational.
  • Diagnose faults and resolve electrical issues efficiently across the site.
  • Complete like-for-like replacements and minor electrical works, inspections, testing and recording results to BS 7671.
  • Support the Responsible Person and Authorised Person as required.
  • Apply Health & Safety standards, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Support escorting and wider operational duties to help the site run safely and effectively.

Location: HMP Buckley Hall, Buckley Hall Road, Rochdale, Lancashire, OL12 9DP
Contract: Permanent
Salary: £30,866 - £36,135 per annum
Hours: 39 hours per week

Working pattern:

  • Monday to Thursday: 08:00 - 17:00
  • Friday: 08:00 - 16:00

Join our vibrant and inclusive Ministry of Justice Facilities Management team, delivering critical services that help prisons operate safely and efficiently.

At Amey, we support His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service by maintaining safe, clean and effective facilities across 60 secure premises in England and Wales. As an Electrician, you will help keep essential electrical systems safe, compliant and operational, contributing to a secure and well‑maintained environment for staff and residents.

What You Will Do
  • Deliver planned and preventative electrical maintenance to keep essential systems safe, compliant and operational.
  • Diagnose faults and resolve electrical issues efficiently across the prison estate.
  • Complete like‑for‑like replacements and minor electrical works, carrying out inspections, testing and recording results in accordance with BS 7671.
  • Support the Responsible Person and Authorised Person when required.
  • Apply Health & Safety standards, risk assessments and safe systems of work consistently.
  • Support escorting and wider operational duties to help the site run safely and effectively.
What You Will Bring
  • A proactive, organised approach with the ability to manage priorities and work to deadlines.
  • BS 7671 18th Edition certification. Candidates with 17th Edition certification will also be considered, with support to upskill.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, the Electricity at Work Regulations and planned preventative maintenance.
  • The ability to work independently, use your initiative and work safely at height.
  • Basic IT skills and the ability to maintain clear and accurate records.

Experience or knowledge of fire alarm and CCTV systems would be advantageous but is not essential.

Security Clearance

As this position is based within a custodial environment, Prison Security Clearance and a standard DBS check will be required. Amey will support the successful candidate through this process.
