Job summary

VN Appointments is seeking a street cleansing operative to maintain cleanliness across highways and local areas in Thurrock. You will operate vehicles up to 3.5t GVW, use a range of cleansing tools, and work as part of an integrated local team following daily schedules.

The role requires flexible, customer-focused collaboration with street cleansing, highways, grounds maintenance, and waste teams, with records kept using in-cab and digital systems. PPE and safety gear must be worn and maintained.

• Complete manual and mechanical street cleansing tasks (litter picking, sweeping, debris removal).
• Perform graffiti removal, fly-tipping clearance, weed and waste removal.
• Carry out safety checks, report faults promptly, and log timesheets and incidents.

Job Purpose

To carry out a range of manual and mechanical street cleansing activities to maintain high standards of cleanliness across highways, car parks, residential areas, footpaths, and communal spaces.

The role involves working as part of an integrated local team, following daily schedules and required service standards while maintaining high levels of health and safety.

Duties include operating vehicles up to 3.5t GVW, including small mechanical sweepers, and using a range of cleansing equipment and tools.

The role requires flexibility, teamwork, a customer-focused approach, and effective collaboration with street cleansing, highways, grounds maintenance, and waste teams.

Accurate records of work must be maintained using digital systems, including in-cab technology and performance monitoring systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate vehicles, machinery, and equipment safely and correctly.
• Complete manual and mechanical street cleansing, including:
• Litter picking and sweeping
• Debris removal
• Mechanical sweeping
• Graffiti and fly-posting removal
• Fly-tipping and bulky waste removal
• Weed removal
• Emptying litter and dog-waste bins
• Hazardous waste and needle removal
• Use equipment such as blowers, strimmers, and hand tools safely.
• Only use equipment when trained and authorised.
• Carry out daily vehicle and equipment safety checks and report faults promptly.
• Complete scheduled and reactive work efficiently and to required standards.
• Maintain accurate records, timesheets, work logs, vehicle checks, and incident reports.
• Maintain the appropriate driving licence and report any changes.
• Wear and maintain PPE correctly.
• Work independently, safely, and effectively as part of a team.
• Support other operational teams with joint tasks, incidents, projects, and service activities.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and professional working environment.
• Work safely when operating alone and undertake other reasonable duties when required.
• Provide a professional and customer-focused service.
