Job summary

Civic Recruitment Limited is seeking an NLGV Driver Operative in West Thurrock, Essex, for a 6 months local authority contract. You will assist the Clean & Green Services team by driving non-LGV vehicles, performing street cleansing across public spaces, and maintaining safety and cleanliness.

The role requires a Category B driving licence, experience with cleansing equipment, and ability to work outdoors in all weather. Working hours are 37 per week, 14:00–22:00, Monday to Friday, on-site.

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate a range of non-LGV vehicles.
• Carry out street cleansing across highways, parks, housing areas, footpaths and Council land.
• Operate mechanical and pedestrian sweepers.
• Undertake litter picking and street sweeping duties.
• Remove graffiti, fly-posting and fly-tipped waste.
• Remove leaves, weeds and environmental debris; empty bins.
• Collect and dispose of hazardous waste safely.
• Carry out vehicle inspections and daily records.
• Use handheld devices for task recording and reporting.
• Maintain vehicles and equipment in safe condition.
• Work independently and as part of a team; provide good customer service.

Job Purpose

As an NLGV Driver Operative , you will support Thurrock Council's Clean & Green Services team by undertaking a range of street cleansing and environmental maintenance duties across the borough. You will operate non-LGV vehicles and cleansing equipment while helping to maintain public spaces to a high standard of cleanliness, safety, and appearance.

Key Duties/Accountabilities

• Drive and operate a range of non-LGV vehicles.
• Carry out street cleansing activities across public highways, parks, housing areas, footpaths, and Council-owned land.
• Operate mechanical and pedestrian-controlled sweepers.
• Undertake litter picking and manual street sweeping duties.
• Remove graffiti and fly-posting.
• Remove fly-tipped waste.
• Remove leaves, weeds, and other environmental debris.
• Empty litter and dog waste bins.
• Safely collect and dispose of hazardous waste such as needles and sharp objects.
• Remove and dispose of deceased animals where required.
• Use hand tools and equipment including blowers and strimmers.
• Carry out vehicle inspections, timesheets, and daily operational records.
• Use handheld devices and in-cab systems for task recording and reporting.
• Maintain vehicles, equipment, and tools in a safe condition.
• Work independently and as part of a team to meet service standards.
• Provide excellent customer service when interacting with residents and the public.
• Support other Clean & Green, Highways, Grounds Maintenance, and Waste Collection teams when required.

Essential Experience Required

• Experience driving non-LGV vehicles.
• Experience undertaking manual and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Experience within street cleansing, grounds maintenance, environmental services, waste services, or similar operational roles.
• Experience using cleansing equipment such as mechanical sweepers.
• Ability to work without direct supervision.
• Experience using handheld devices or task-recording systems.
• Experience completing operational documentation and records.
• Good communication skills and ability to work with a range of stakeholders.
• Ability to undertake physically demanding work.

Essential Qualifications Required

• Full UK Category B Driving Licence.
• Right to Work in the UK.
