Job summary

London Borough of Newham is offering a Learning & Engagement Apprentice role at Newham Heritage Centre. The scheme provides hands-on experience with community and visitor activities, while supporting preparation for the centre's opening and a front‑facing role afterward.

Open to Newham residents; no degree required. The apprenticeship includes training with an accredited provider, mentorship, and progression opportunities within a structured programme.

• Working closely with people, responding to visitor needs and supporting delivery of the creative activity programme.
• Supporting both back‑stage preparation and front facing activities after opening.
• Participating in community and visitor focused activities at Newham Heritage Centre.
• Participating in lines of learning and development with an accredited education provider.
• Delivering presentations to colleagues and other stakeholders.

£27,783 Annual Salary which equates to £14.80 per hour

About Us

Newham Council is working to ensure there is greater investment in public spaces and more opportunities for young people. This includes leading a landmark project to transform the historic Canning Town Old Library into Newham Heritage Centre, the borough’s newest cultural hub.

When construction work is completed, the building will contain an inspiring new exhibition space, reading room and bespoke archive storage, digital suite, learning space, venue hire space and a cafe. This ambitious project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, will establish a new cultural destination for the borough and connect people who are living, working and studying in Newham.

About the Job

We are seeking a Learning & Engagement Apprentice to join Newham Heritage Centre’s team. We are looking for someone who is passionate about heritage, culture and community engagement. The role will involve working closely with people, responding to visitor needs and supporting the delivery of our ambitious creative activity programme. The Learning & Engagement Apprentice will have the unique opportunity get ‘hands‑on’ practical experience, working on a range of community and visitor focused activities at Newham Heritage Centre’s. They will work behind the scenes as we prepare for Newham Heritage Centre’s opening as well as have a front facing role in visitor and participant activities after opening.

• 18 month fixed-term contract with Newham Council.

To successfully complete the Apprenticeship, not only must you meet the performance standards required, but you will also need meet the off-the job learning requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Completing tests and assignments
• Delivering presentations to colleagues and other stakeholders.
