Job summary

Gi Group in Ryton-on-Dunsmore is opening a driver training school for new and inexperienced Class 1 drivers. Trainees will complete 2–3 days of on-site training followed by a final assessment, after which you join ongoing driver work. Training days are unpaid.

Standard rates apply for Weeks 1–12 (days and nights with different rates) and increase slightly after Week 12. The role includes loading, deliveries, and strict safety/documentation; on-site parking and overtime opportunities are

Qualifications

• Valid HGV Class 1 (C+E) licence, Driver CPC, and Digital Tachograph card
• Open to newly qualified and inexperienced drivers (on-site training provided)
• Minimum age of 21 for insurance purposes
• Maximum of 6 penalty points (SP endorsements only; no other endorsement types accepted)
• Must provide a full 2-year work or education history
• Calm under pressure, flexible, with strong customer service, communication, and attention to detail

Responsibilities

• Load, unload, and secure freight safely
• Complete scheduled deliveries and collections across varied parcel weights
• Ensure accurate completion of all delivery documentation
• Perform daily vehicle checks and report any defects immediately
• Work efficiently to meet timed delivery schedules

Job description

Location: Ryton-on-Dunsmore
Pay Rate: £19.61 - £20.45 per hour (plus 1.5x overtime rate)

Class 1 Driver - Training

Our client in Ryton-on-Dunsmore is opening a driving school for new and inexperienced Class 1 drivers
Candidates will complete 2 to 3 days of driver training followed by a final assessment
Upon successful completion of the assessment, candidates will move into ongoing work with our client
Please note: all training days are unpaid

Class 1 Driver - Rates of Pay: Standard Rate (Weeks 1-12)

• Days (04:00 - 22:00): £19.61 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay, PAYE only)
• Nights (22:00 - 04:00): £19.89 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay, PAYE only)

Post-12 Weeks

• Days: £19.90 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay, PAYE only)
• Nights: £20.45 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay, PAYE only)
• Overtime: 1.5x for your 6th consecutive shift

Class 1 Driver - Shifts and Hours

• Shifts available 7 days a week
• Night start windows: 22:00 - 02:00
• Afternoon start windows: 12:00 - 14:00
• Shifts run between 8 and 12 hours per day

Class 1 Driver - The Role
