Job summary

Pontoon is looking for a Network Device Telemetry & Analysis Engineer to onboard, process, and analyze network telemetry. You will bring telemetry data into Splunk, build dashboards and alerts, and enable Operations with data-driven insights for troubleshooting and performance monitoring.

The role is hands-on and closely aligned with Network Operations, Automation, and Monitoring teams. Chester-based with 3 days in office essential; contract initially 12 months rolling.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong experience with network telemetry and data analysis.
  • Hands-on Splunk data ingestion, searches, dashboards, and alerts.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, normalize, and onboard network telemetry data into Splunk and analytics platforms.
  • Design, build, and maintain Splunk dashboards and alerts for Operations teams.
  • Develop alerting strategies to detect network degradation and availability risks.
  • Collaborate with Network Engineering, Automation and Monitoring teams on telemetry initiatives.
  • Validate data accuracy, timeliness, and gaps; document telemetry sources and usage guidelines.

Role Summary

The Network Device Telemetry & Analysis Engineer is responsible for onboarding, processing, and analyzing network infrastructure and device telemetry. This role focuses on bringing telemetry data into Splunk and related platforms, developing dashboards and alerts, and enabling Operations teams with data‑driven insights for troubleshooting, availability decisions, and performance monitoring. The role is hands‑on and closely aligned with Network Operations, Automation, and Monitoring teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, normalize, and onboard network device telemetry and instrumentation data (metrics, logs, events, streams) into Splunk and approved analytics platforms.
  • Work with Network Engineering teams to understand device behaviors, health indicators, and performance signals across routing, switching, wireless, and SD‑WAN platforms.
  • Design, build, and maintain Splunk dashboards, searches, and visualizations used by Operations teams for troubleshooting and situational awareness.
  • Develop alerting strategies based on telemetry data to detect network degradation, anomalies, and availability risks.
  • Ensure telemetry data supports operational decision‑making, including incident triage, root cause analysis, and proactive issue identification.
  • Partner with Monitoring and Observability architects to align device telemetry with broader network health and observability models.
  • Validate data accuracy, completeness, and timeliness; identify telemetry gaps and work with stakeholders to remediate them.
  • Support onboarding of new network platforms or device types into the telemetry and analytics pipeline.
  • Document telemetry sources, dashboards, alert logic, and operational usage guidelines for Production Operations.
  • Provide support during major rollouts or network changes to validate telemetry and alert behavior.
Requirements
Education

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Experience Range

Years of experience in network operations, telemetry, monitoring, or data analysis roles.

Foundational Skills
  • Strong understanding of enterprise network infrastructure (routing, switching, wireless, SD‑WAN).
  • Hands‑on experience with Splunk for data ingestion, searches, dashboards, and alerts.
  • Experience working with network telemetry sources such as SNMP, syslog, telemetry streams, APIs, and device metrics.
  • Ability to translate raw telemetry into actionable insights for Operations teams.
  • Familiarity with incident, problem, and change management processes in large enterprises.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to data quality.
  • Good communication skills to work effectively with Engineering and Operations teams.
Desired Skills
  • Experience with controller‑based or software‑defined networks.
  • Basic scripting skills (Python, SPL, API usage) for telemetry processing and analysis.
  • Exposure to automation‑enabled environments and CI/CD‑driven network deployments.
  • Experience working in large‑scale network environments with thousands of devices.
  • Understanding network KPIs, availability metrics, and performance analysis.
