Job summary

GMCA is seeking a Networks Engineer to join its Digital Team and help design, implement, maintain, and continually improve secure, resilient network services across the organisation.

The role involves collaborating with internal teams and external partners to deliver high-quality network solutions, ensure service availability, and support the organisation's digital services in Greater Manchester.

Qualifications

  • ITIL Intermediate or equivalent certificate relevant to the area of expertise.

The Role

Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) is seeking an experienced Networks Engineer to join its Digital Team and help deliver and support the network infrastructure that underpins critical services across the organisation.

You will be responsible for supporting the design, implementation, maintenance, and continual improvement of secure, resilient, and high-performing network services. Working with colleagues, partners, and suppliers, you will assist in delivering network solutions that support organisational priorities, ensure service availability, and enable the effective delivery of digital services across GMCA.

You will be joining an award-winning digital service that is enabling the organisation to be one of the leading Combined Authorities in the country and supporting the reform of public services across Greater Manchester in line with the Greater Manchester Strategy.

The role holder will:

  • Support the delivery of high-quality network and communications services by applying specialist technical skills within the primary area of focus.
  • Support the implementation of network infrastructure solutions, contributing technical expertise to ensure solutions meet organisational requirements.
  • Liaises with suppliers, contractors, service providers and other external agencies to support the implementation, maintenance and improvement of network and communications infrastructure.
  • Support network and infrastructure projects by providing technical input, assisting with delivery activities and contributing to project outcomes.
  • Support the performance, availability and security of network infrastructure through proactive monitoring, maintenance and technical troubleshooting.
  • Support the resolution of incidents, service requests and security alerts, applying specialist technical knowledge in accordance with service level agreements and organisational risk requirements.
  • Assist in the maintenance, configuration and optimisation of network infrastructure, ensuring services remain secure, resilient and fit for purpose.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of systems documentation by contributing detailed technical content to knowledgebases, technical procedures and support documentation.
  • Assist with the testing and validation of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity arrangements relating to network and communications infrastructure.
  • Support knowledge transfer and technical mentoring across first, second and third-line support teams.
  • Support engagement with internal stakeholders, partners and external organisations to identify technical requirements and provide specialist technical advice to both technical and non-technical users.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of network security controls, contributing to the protection of organisational data, systems and services.
  • Contributes to the evaluation of new and emerging technologies and assists in identifying opportunities for service improvement and operational efficiencies.
  • Support the Senior Networks Engineer and wider Digital Services management team in delivering team objectives and operational requirements, including coordinating activities, sharing technical knowledge and contributing to the effective delivery of services within direct and matrix-managed teams.

About you:

  • Educated to degree level in relevant area or equivalent
  • Relevant professional qualification, membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • ITIL Intermediate - Capability or Lifecycle Certificate relevant to the area of expertise
  • Technical experience across a range of solutions and platforms in the Local Government arena.
  • Working knowledge of project management methodologies and an ability to apply these in practice, and experience of successfully managing complex projects from inception to completion.
  • Experience of analysing and interpreting complex information and communicating it appropriately to a range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of project management principles
  • Demonstrable experience of successful project management of a new technology system or a major upgrade of a corporate system impacting on a wide number of users across the Service
