Job summary

Devon County Council is seeking an experienced Neighbourhood Highway Engineer to lead the Northern Devon Neighbourhood Highway Team, delivering local maintenance programmes, providing clear technical advice, and coordinating traffic management and winter service.

You will work with elected members, councils and communities to turn local priorities into practical highway solutions, while developing team performance and managing resources within approved budgets.

Qualifications

• Incorporated Engineer status
• Experience in highway maintenance, traffic management or engineering
• Confident professional judgement and sound technical knowledge
• Ability to lead, mentor or manage others
• Customer-focused approach to community engagement
• Clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences

Responsibilities

• Act as a trusted local technical lead, supporting highway maintenance, traffic management, local highways projects, winter service and emergency response.
• Lead and support the Northern Devon Neighbourhood Highway Team and provide clear technical advice on highways and traffic management.
• Deliver local maintenance programmes and highway projects and manage workloads, resources and performance.
• Coordinate with Members, councils and communities to turn local priorities into practical highway solutions.
• Take responsibility for financial management and reporting of locally managed maintenance programmes.
• Share best practice across Devon’s highway groups and deputise when needed.
