Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, innovative and highly motivated individual to join the GMMH Corporate Safeguarding Team as the Trusts Named Nurse for Child Safeguarding. The post will be a Secondment Cover / Fixed Term Contract until the 30th September 2026.

The postholder will lead on the child safeguarding agenda and be responsible for ensuring that the Trust carries out its statutory duties in relation to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

The post holder must hold a current nursing qualification and have demonstrable post registration experience in child safeguarding.

Main duties
  • Share learning from national and local case reviews, complaints, incidents or near misses related to safeguarding of children.
  • Provide specialist knowledge consistent with the Children Acts 1989 and 2004 and related guidance, and relevant Local Safeguarding Children’s Partnerships.
  • Raise the profile and staff awareness of child safeguarding issues for staff working with adults, children and young people affected by mental health and substance misuse issues, including Tier 4 CAMHS services.
  • Promote effective practice that enables staff to identify child safeguarding concerns and respond appropriately.
  • Operationally manage and provide leadership to the Deputy Child Safeguarding Lead.
  • Act as FGM Lead for the Trust.
  • Support the Named Nurse / Professional for Adult Safeguarding to ensure compliance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Promote and support the Serious Youth Violence agenda across the Trust in conjunction with system partners.

Person specification – Qualifications / Experience
Essential criteria
  • Registered practitioner RMN, RGN, LDN, SCPHN
  • Significant experience of leadership role for child safeguarding, multi‑agency working, national agenda for the NHS, clinical governance
  • Evidence of post‑registration education and development relevant to safeguarding children, child development and welfare, and continuous professional development
  • Excellent verbal, written and communication skills; standard key‑board skills and use of training equipment and materials, including designing and delivering training via Teams and PowerPoint
  • Highly specialist knowledge and understanding of working with complex family situations, mental health, substance misuse in relation to safeguarding children, recognition and assessment of children at risk of significant harm, and understanding of the National agenda for Child Safeguarding / Children in Need, legal literacy – child safeguarding
  • Able to use own initiative, interpret policy, provide advice and act independently, and work effectively as part of a team; confident, approachable and able to work under pressure with a positive attitude to dealing with change; highly motivated and reliable with attention to detail and completes work on time to a high standard
  • Ability to travel across a variety of locations within Greater Manchester
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification, childcare law, policy and practice>
  • Research skills, influencing skills, IT skills (ECDL or equivalent)
  • Specific expertise in children’s health and development, child maltreatment and local arrangements for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, in‑depth knowledge on childcare law, policy and practice
Personal development and other requirements

The Trust mandates all post holders who require a DBS for their role to subscribe to the DBS Update Service. You will be required to enrol for this service for a fee of £16 per year and maintain registration throughout your employment with GMMH.
