Job summary

Williams F1 Team in Grove, United Kingdom is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to join the Controls team. You will calibrate gearbox and clutch control systems, tune dyno data, and develop the dyno control system with vehicle models to reflect track behavior.

The role emphasizes embedded real-time ECU software, MATLAB/Simulink development, and cross-functional collaboration with Vehicle Dynamics and Powertrain. A strong motorsport background is preferred.

Qualifications

• Degree in electrical, control systems, automotive, mechanical, software or related engineering field.
• At least 5 years in controls engineering, ideally in motorsport or high-performance automotive.
• Strong MATLAB and Simulink experience with confident programming.
• Good understanding of embedded, real-time code targeting an ECU.
• Able to read and trace control code and state flows to spot advantages and risks.
• Transmission controls experience preferred; dyno knowledge a close second.
• Nice to have: Python, ECU toolchain, dSpace/SpeedGoat, AVL Puma.

Responsibilities

• Calibrate and develop the gearbox and clutch control system with reliable, repeatable gear shifts.
• Analyse dyno and car data to diagnose shift performance issues and calibrate accordingly.
• Learn, use and help develop the dyno control system and vehicle models to reflect track behavior.
• Build control simulations and tooling, mainly in MATLAB, Simulink and Python.
• Work within the ECU code and toolchain to optimize gear shifts.
• Support troubleshooting on the dyno and car, collaborating across the team.
• Document designs, test protocols and results for traceability.
