Job summary

S. Norton & Co Ltd is seeking a capable Heavy Plant Operative to load and unload materials, feed processing equipment, and assist with ship loading tasks. The role involves operating 360 material handlers and wheel loaders in a metal recycling environment, with a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork.

You will perform routine machine checks, follow company procedures, and assist in guiding less experienced staff through loading protocols. A proactive, safety-first approach is essential.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 3 or above in a relevant subject or comparable work experience.
• GCSE English & Maths (Grade C or above).
• Relative experience in metal recycling or related processes.

Responsibilities

• To load and unload materials from heavy goods vehicles and ships.
• To feed shredders, shears and balers as directed and in line with requirements.
• To work as an exemplar guiding others through ship loading protocols.
• To carry out daily machine start-up, shutdown and safety checks.

Job description

The role involves the loading and unloading of HGV vehicles, the loading/feeding of shredders, shears and balers and moving of materials into stockpiles. There is also a requirement to load ships as and when required. Depending on your experience and capability, you will be driving various heavy plant including 360 material handlers, wheel loaders etc as used within the metal recycling industry. Key Responsibilities:

• To pick up and move a variety of material, sometimes in confined spaces To feed the shredder, shears and balers as directed and in line with business requirements To load and unload materials from heavy goods vehicles To load ships in a safe and orderly manner To work as an exemplar in guiding others through the protocols of ship loading To carry out daily machine start-up and shut-down procedures To carry out daily machine checks To complete machine checklists on a daily basis To ensure work is of a high standard To comply with all equipment
