Job summary

ALS Laboratories (UK) Ltd in Trowbridge is seeking a conscientious Microbiologist to join the laboratory team. You will perform microbiological testing, including plate counting, identification and confirmation, following documented methods with a focus on accuracy, quality and safety.

This full-time, permanent role offers a structured schedule with initial Monday-Friday days, then a Sunday-Thursday shift; annual salary £28,267.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 GCSEs (grades 9–4 or A*–C) including Science, English and Mathematics.
• Sound theoretical and practical knowledge of microbiology with experience across methods.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Able to work independently, manage priorities, and meet deadlines under pressure.
• Familiar with Microsoft Office and LIMS.
• Committed to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 standards.
• Proactive team player with focus on safety and lab cleanliness.

Responsibilities

• Carry out microbiological testing including plate counting, identification and confirmation.
• Ensure tests completed within agreed timeframes and inform management of delays.
• Enter and approve test results accurately and promptly.
• Maintain a clean, organised laboratory environment and correct waste disposal.
• Monitor and report on laboratory stock levels and request replenishment.
• Deliver training on microbiological procedures and theories.
• Adhere to health & safety and quality procedures, including PPE and incident reporting.
• Promote a positive safety culture and address unsafe practices.
