Job summary

The University of Sheffield invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a project assessing the feasibility of producing protein emulsifiers for the food industry, focusing on microalgae cultivation and biomass generation.

Based in the School of Chemical, Materials & Biological Engineering, the role involves experimental design, lab work at multiple scales, data analysis, collaboration with partners, and disseminating results through publications and conferences.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biological science or bioprocess engineering (essential).
  • Experience culturing microalgae and harvesting biomass with biochemical characterisation.
  • Experience motivating and communicating with a research team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to report and present to staff at all levels.
  • Creative problem solving and long-term planning abilities.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources and plan work activities.
  • Experience adapting skills to new circumstances.

Responsibilities

  • Design, set-up and experimental work to achieve project aims with supervisor guidance.
  • Laboratory cultivation of microalgae at different scales and biomass harvesting.
  • Work independently and with others to identify research methods and develop new approaches.
  • Write and document lab procedures, protocols and study designs.
  • Maintain records, analyse data, and prepare reports; participate in collaborations and funder calls.
  • Collaborate with other researchers to plan research and share data and samples.
