Job summary

City of Bristol College seeks two postdoctoral researchers to study nitrogen storage crystals in microalgae ecology and develop bio-inspired crystalline materials. The role involves monitoring from field sites, culturing microalgae, and conducting microscopy and in vitro crystallization studies.

The project is ERC-funded and collaborates with Bristol University and UKCEH, offering mentorship within a diverse, international biomineralization research group.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biology/ecology/chemistry or related field.
  • Experience in microalgae ecology or culturing.
  • Experience with bio-imaging: optical microscopy, TEM, cryogenic EM.
  • Experience with Mass Spectrometry.
  • Ability to collaborate across experimental, computational and data science.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor microalgae in field/caculations and perform chemical/biological analyses.
  • Perform optical and electron microscopy investigations of phytoplankton.
  • Investigate crystal formation pathways in microalgae.
  • Conduct in vitro crystallization experiments for bio-inspired materials.
  • Prepare manuscripts for Prof. Palmer’s group.
  • Support development of related grant funding applications.
