Job summary

Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital in Coventry is seeking a Mental Health Law Practitioner to support the MHA Administrator in applying the Mental Health Act 1983. The role is Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00, based on site.

You will ensure lawful detention procedures, maintain accurate records, manage detention paperwork, and assist with rights explanations for patients and relatives, including coordinating hearings where appropriate.

Qualifications

• GCSE level with English and Maths.
• Excellent organisational skills.
• Experience in healthcare environment desirable.

Responsibilities

• Ensure procedures under the Mental Health Act and related legislation are followed.
• Ensure lawful detention of patients.
• Maintain adequate records for detained patients.
• Safely store and manage detention documentation.
• Receive section papers during working hours.
• Arrange correction of errors to meet legal requirements.
• Inform patients and relatives of rights and assist with exercising them.
• Maintain an up-to-date list of mental health solicitors and assist with hearings where possible.

We are currently recruiting for a Mental Health Law Practitioner, to support the MHA Administrator in ensuring the legal requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 at Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital in Coventry. You will be working Monday to Friday, 09:00am to 17:00pm.

Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital is our emergency mental health hospital in Coventry. The service supports adults across three wards to move as quickly and safely as possible to the most appropriate and least restrictive environment for them.

Your day-to-day…

• To ensure that all procedures relative to the Mental Health Act and associated legislation are adhered to.
• Ensure the legal detention of patients.
• Ensure adequate records for detained patients are maintained.
• Ensure adequate and safe storage of documentation.
• Receive section papers during working hours.
• Arrange correction of errors relating to detention of patients to meet all legal requirements.
• Ensure patient and nearest relatives are aware of individual rights and power of detention in force and assist as required with exercising these rights.
• Ensure an up-to‑date list of mental health solicitors is available to patients and that patients are represented at hearings or appeals where possible or appropriate.

We are looking for people who have

• Previous administration experience including report preparation, organising meetings, liaising with customers/clients
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) with qualifications in English and Maths
• Exceptional organisational skills
• Experience of working in a Healthcare environment alongside medical practitioners is desirable
• Knowledge of Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA 1983) is desirable
• Knowledge of compliance and auditing systems required by regulatory bodies (CQC) is desirable
