Job description

Job Title: 2s Head Coach

The 2s Head Coach will work alongside our Head of Performance Squad to ensure alignment of concepts and programmes across both 1s and 2s squads. Collaborating with the Head of Performance Development and Head of Performance Squad, they will help drive the vision and strategy for the 2s squad and its members. The role involves creating a high-performance environment, developing effective training programmes—including strategy, tactics, and playing principles—and managing succession planning and youth talent development.

Performance Squad Definition

The Performance Squad, defined by the Head of Performance Squad, will comprise approximately 22 players, including first team players and aspiring first team players who may also play for the second team.

Weekly Schedule
  • Tuesday: Performance squad and 2nd team squad training (including aspiring 2nd team players).
  • Wednesday: Selection for the upcoming weekend matches.
  • Thursday: Training for the selected first and second teams.
Roles & Responsibilities
Training and Match Preparation
  • Plan and execute high-quality training focusing on technical, tactical, and conditioning aspects.
  • Prepare teams for matches with analysis and strategy.
  • Lead during matches, making tactical adjustments and providing feedback.
Player Development
  • Foster a positive, high-performance culture.
  • Develop individual skills through tailored coaching and feedback.
  • Work with the coaching team and captains to create talent pathways.
  • Contribute to squad development, including integrating youth and recruiting external players.
Team Management and Development
  • Manage squad selection and communicate clearly with players, following club policies.
  • Collaborate with the first team coach and provide feedback to players, including non-selected ones.
  • Build strong relationships with players and staff.
  • Ensure consistency in technical and tactical principles across teams.
Performance Analysis
  • Use video analysis to inform coaching and give feedback.
  • Identify improvement areas and develop targeted plans.
Club Engagement
  • Represent St Albans Hockey Club positively and contribute to the sport's development.
Time Commitment
  • Attend and deliver training on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Attend league matches on weekends.
  • Support youth and adult training sessions as needed.
  • Manage selection and communication processes.
  • Participate in management meetings as required.
Reporting and Collaboration

Report to the Head of Performance Hockey Development and Head of Performance Squad. Collaborate with the Head of Performance Squad, Head of Coaching Development, Head of Youth, and Head of Club Hockey.
