Job summary

Tyneside Surgical Services is seeking a medical typist to support its clinical and administrative teams in a day case unit. You will turn digital dictation into accurate clinic letters, operative notes and discharge summaries, with strong emphasis on accuracy and timelines.

Experience with electronic patient record systems and a high standard of written English are required, along with confidentiality and deadline awareness. Knowledge of NHS terminology is advantageous.

Qualifications

• Previous medical typing or medical administration experience.
• Experience using electronic patient record systems.
• Excellent typing skills and accuracy.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Excellent written English.
• Good spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Confidentiality and working to deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Transcribe medical correspondence from digital dictation and approved sources.
• Type clinic letters, operative notes, discharge summaries and other clinical documents.
• Format and present documents to the organisation's standards.
• Check spelling, grammar, punctuation and medical terminology.
• Record patient identifiers accurately (names, DOB, NHS numbers).
• Identify discrepancies and refer to clinicians or managers.
• Complete and return correspondence within departmental timescales.
• Amend and retype correspondence on request.
• Maintain accurate electronic and/or paper records.
• Collaborate with consultants, nurses and admin staff to keep correspondence accurate and timely.
