Job description

Derbyshire Pathology - Medical Laboratory Assistant (Histology Department)

Derbyshire Pathology has a vacancy for a Medical Laboratory Assistant within the Histology Department at the Royal Derby Hospital site. Cross-site working may be required in the future. The service currently operates Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30, including Saturday working over a rolling 5-week roster.

Histopathology provides a diagnostic service to clinicians and GPs, handling approximately 50,000 patient sample requests annually.

The role of the MLA is well established within the department. The successful candidate should have a good level of general education, including English and science, be IT literate, experienced in admin tasks such as filing and query handling, and familiar with safe load handling practices.

We seek an enthusiastic, committed individual with a keen interest in medical science, an adaptable nature, resilience in a changing environment, and a willingness to contribute to a busy team.

Laboratory experience is not essential, as tasks will be taught in-house. Candidates should demonstrate good teamwork, initiative, and the ability to follow protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Data entry, admin, and filing
  2. Assisting senior staff with sample handling
  3. Maintenance of laboratory equipment
  4. Replenishing laboratory stocks and reporting low levels
  5. Handling human tissue and chemical disposal
  6. Laboratory housekeeping

Training will be provided in-house, with competency assessments and regular reviews.
