We have a fantastic opportunity to join Thames Water as a Mechanical Technician based at our wastewater treatment site on the outskirts of Oxford.

You will be part of a frontline support team of technicians responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations and improvements of wastewater treatment processes for the project upgrade within the Thames Valley North Area of Waste & Bioresources Operations.

Your responsibilities include investigating plant failures, carrying out repairs promptly to prevent process interruptions, and ensuring all equipment operates safely and efficiently through proactive and reactive maintenance methods. You will inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify, or repair mechanical equipment.

You will also provide technical advice, refer to up-to-date technical knowledge, and support or train technical trainees if required.

What you’ll be doing as the Mechanical Technician
  1. Carrying out scheduled planned maintenance on mechanical equipment, ensuring compliance with standards and continuous improvement of mechanical assets.
  2. Maintaining equipment such as pumps, chemical dosing systems, gearboxes, high-pressure systems, gas systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, valves, motors, generators, drive belts, conveyors, scrapers, and associated control gear, automatic valves, and penstocks.
  3. Investigating plant failures and performing repairs efficiently to avoid process interruptions, including diagnosing complex faults during incidents.
  4. Providing technical advice, updating knowledge, and supporting training for trainees.
  5. Completing lifting operations safely according to LOLER regulations.
  6. Supporting the design and build of new processes.
  7. Proactively reviewing asset health and availability on site.
  8. Ensuring all relevant training, including mechanical and maintenance, is up to date.
  9. Working safely and adhering to all health and safety procedures.

Base Location: Oxford STW - OX4 4YU

Working Pattern: 38 hours, 5 days over 7.

All PPE and tools are provided.

What you should bring to the role
  • Significant experience in mechanical systems, ideally as a time-served apprentice with NVQ or C&G Level 3 in mechanical engineering.
  • Experience working on large industrial plant equipment, including pumps, within the utilities sector, is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues is essential.
  • A valid driving license is required.
  • Participation in a 24/7 standby rota after training, with additional pay.
