Mechanical Maintenance Engineer – Barnsley
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join a busy manufacturing site in Barnsley. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled Maintenance Engineer / Mechanical Maintenance Engineer looking to develop their career within a fast-paced manufacturing and production environment.
Working as part of a dedicated maintenance team, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing and fault-finding on a wide range of production machinery and plant equipment. You will play a key role in reducing downtime, improving equipment reliability and ensuring production continues to operate safely and efficiently.
This is a hands-on mechanical maintenance role suited to someone who enjoys diagnosing faults, solving technical problems and keeping production machinery running reliably.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out mechanical maintenance and repairs on production machinery, plant and equipment
- Complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to minimise breakdowns and production downtime
- Diagnose and resolve machine breakdowns quickly and effectively
- Fault find on mechanical systems, including gearboxes and associated machinery
- Work with and understand pneumatic and hydraulic systems and circuits
- Liaise effectively with on-site contractors and remote service engineers
- Use a CMMS maintenance system to accurately record maintenance activities, breakdowns and completed work
- Monitor and maintain appropriate levels of critical engineering spare parts
- Support continuous improvement and equipment reliability initiatives
- Provide guidance and mentor apprentices within the maintenance team
- Work independently and use initiative when responding to breakdowns and technical issues
- Support the wider engineering team with overtime when required
Requirements
To be considered for this Mechanical Maintenance Engineer position, you will need:
- A relevant NVQ Level 3 / City &; Guilds Level 3 qualification or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Maintenance, Engineering or a related discipline
- A minimum of 4 years' industrial maintenance experience
- Previous experience as a Maintenance Engineer, Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Engineering Technician
- Experience working within a manufacturing, production or industrial engineering environment
- Strong mechanical maintenance and fault-finding skills
- Experience working with gearboxes, machinery and mechanical systems
- Good understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics
- Experience carrying out PPM and reactive maintenance
- Experience using CMMS / computerised maintenance management systems
- Ability to diagnose breakdowns efficiently and minimise production downtime
- Good communication skills and the ability to work with contractors and external engineers
- Ability to work independently, prioritise workloads and use your own initiative
- Flexibility to work overtime when required to support production
Shift Pattern
The role operates on a 4-shift rota:
- Shift 1: 6:00am – 2:00pm, Monday to Friday
- Shift 2: 2:00pm – 10:00pm, Monday to Friday
- Shift 3: 10:00pm – 6:00am, Monday to Friday
- Shift 4: 6:00am – 4:00pm, Thursday to Sunday
