Job description

Junior / Intermediate Mechanical Estimator | M&E Building Services | Southampton, Hampshire | £45,000–£60,000 + Car or Car Allowance + Benefits

An established M&E Building Services contractor based in the Southampton area is looking to appoint a Junior or Intermediate Mechanical Estimator to join its pre-construction team.

This is an excellent opportunity for somebody who already has mechanical estimating experience and is looking to continue developing their career, while the company would also consider an experienced mechanical building services professional who is looking to transition into an estimating role.

The business delivers mechanical and electrical projects across a broad range of sectors, including commercial, education, healthcare, leisure, industrial, public-sector and refurbishment environments, with projects typically ranging from approximately £100,000 through to £5 million.

The successful candidate will work alongside experienced members of the estimating and pre-construction team, gaining exposure to a varied tender workload and the opportunity to further develop their knowledge across the full mechanical estimating process.

The Role

As Junior / Intermediate Mechanical Estimator, your responsibilities will include:

  • * Preparing and assisting with accurate and competitive mechanical tenders
  • * Reviewing drawings, specifications and tender documentation
  • * Undertaking quantity take-offs and preparing material and equipment schedules
  • * Obtaining and analysing quotations from suppliers and subcontractors
  • * Calculating labour, material and subcontractor costs
  • * Preparing cost plans, tender summaries and supporting documentation
  • * Pricing mechanical installations including HVAC, heating, ventilation, pipework, plantrooms and public-health systems
  • * Liaising with suppliers, subcontractors and internal project teams
  • * Supporting value-engineering exercises and tender reviews
  • * Assisting with the handover of successful tenders to the project delivery team
  • * Developing a strong understanding of the complete mechanical estimating and pre-construction process
The Ideal Candidate

The company is flexible regarding the exact level of experience and would consider candidates from either of the following backgrounds:

  • * A Junior or Intermediate Mechanical Estimator with experience gained within an M&E or Mechanical Building Services contractor
  • * An experienced mechanical building services professional looking to transition into estimating, potentially from a Project Engineer, Project Manager, Design Engineer, CAD Technician, or similar technical/project-delivery background

You should ideally have:

  • * Strong technical knowledge of mechanical building services installations
  • * A good understanding of HVAC, heating, ventilation, pipework and associated mechanical systems
  • * The ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and technical documentation
  • * Good commercial and numerical awareness
  • * Strong attention to detail
  • * Good communication and organisational skills
  • * The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a pre-construction team
  • * A genuine interest in developing a long-term career within mechanical estimating

Previous estimating experience would be advantageous, although it is not essential for somebody with the right mechanical building services background, technical knowledge and aptitude to make the transition.

Experience using Ensign or similar estimating software would also be advantageous but is not essential.

Remuneration

The successful Junior / Intermediate Mechanical Estimator will receive:

  • * Company benefits package
  • * Ongoing training and development
  • * Exposure to a broad range of mechanical building services projects
  • * Genuine opportunity to develop within estimating and pre-construction
  • * Long-term career progression
