Job summary

Mansell Recruitment Group is recruiting an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer for its workshop team. The role focuses on repair, overhaul, assembly and testing of high-precision mechanical assemblies in a modern workshop.

You will dismantle, inspect and repair complex assemblies, troubleshoot legacy components and maintain accurate workshop documentation to engineering standards. Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and gearboxes is desirable.

Job description

An established engineering company operating within a highly regulated industry is looking to recruit an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to join its workshop team. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands‑on engineer with strong mechanical assembly, overhaul and fault‑finding experience who enjoys working on complex, precision‑engineered products.

The role focuses on the repair, overhaul, assembly and testing of high‑precision mechanical assemblies, working to exacting quality standards within a modern workshop environment.

The Role

As a Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for dismantling, inspecting, repairing and rebuilding complex mechanical assemblies while ensuring all work complies with engineering procedures and quality standards. You will also play a key role in troubleshooting legacy components, supporting continuous improvement initiatives and maintaining accurate workshop documentation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strip, inspect and assess complex mechanical assemblies for wear and serviceability.
  • Carry out precision mechanical repairs, overhaul and reassembly to engineering specifications.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals and maintenance documentation.
  • Assemble mechanical systems, ensuring correct fit, alignment and functionality.
  • Perform functional testing, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems where required.

  • Maintain workshop equipment and ensure tools remain calibrated.

  • Ensure completed assemblies meet the required operational and cosmetic standards.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience in mechanical assembly, repair or overhaul within an engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, tolerances and assembly techniques.
  • Experience working with gearboxes, transmissions or other complex mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and mechanical fault diagnosis.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to producing high‑quality work.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and a proactive approach.
Desirable Experience
  • Background in aerospace, aviation, automotive, defence, marine or other highly regulated industries.
  • Experience working with safety‑critical mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and workshop documentation.
  • Experience using ERP or MRP systems.
  • Understanding of 5S or lean manufacturing principles.
