Job summary

CMR Surgical in Cambridge is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the System Development team's Mechanical Engineering Group. The role focuses on robust mechanical design, prototyping, and manufacturability across electromechanical systems such as the Versius robotic platform.

You will design parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, build and test prototypes, and contribute to design reviews and release documentation. A strong background in mechanical engineering and DFx is essential.

Job description

We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer with strong design fundamentals, practical problem-solving skills and experience across prototyping and manufacturing methods. CAD capability is important, but this is not a CAD-only role - we're looking for someone who can think through mechanical challenges, make good engineering decisions and develop robust solutions that work in the real world. You would be joining our Mechanical Engineering Team within the System Development department, based in Cambridge. The System Development department designs, develops and maintains the electromechanical robotic system, including the Surgeon Console, Bedside Units, and accessories such as the endoscopic camera. Together with our surgical instruments and consumables, these make up the Versius surgical robotic system. This is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to grow their career in truly multidisciplinary product development. This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of three days per week based in the office.

We're a fast-paced company and as such roles change and evolve. We'd expect you to be willing to turn your hand to anything within the Technology function that helps the team deliver its objectives. To be successful in this role, you'll have experience developing mechanical or electromechanical products. You'll be comfortable working from first principles, thinking through design trade-offs and turning ambiguous technical challenges into practical, robust and manufacturable solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical design solutions for new products and features, product improvements and sustaining engineering activities, working within formal design control procedures.
  • Develop practical, robust and manufacturable mechanical solutions, applying appropriate design-for-manufacture principles across processes such as machining, sheet metal fabrication and injection moulding.
  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, applying solid and surface modelling techniques as appropriate.
  • Build, test and evaluate prototypes, rigs and fixtures to reduce technical risk, generate evidence and refine designs against functional and performance requirements.
  • Produce and maintain clear design definition, including engineering drawings, configuration information and supporting documentation required for release and change control.
  • Write clear technical reports to support product development, design reviews, verification activities and engineering change decisions.
  • Investigate product issues, identify root causes and implement corrective actions that improve product performance, reliability and manufacturability.
  • Develop and improve departmental tools, processes, and engineering methods
You will need to have:
  • A relevant academic background in Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline
  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals, including the ability to reason from first principles, make sound engineering judgements and carry out appropriate design calculations
  • Experience developing mechanical parts and assemblies for complex products, ideally within an electromechanical system
  • Good SolidWorks capability, including solid and surface modelling techniques, with the ability to create clear design intent rather than simply produce CAD geometry
  • Experience designing parts and creating drawings for a range of manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal fabrication and injection moulding
  • Practical experience building, testing or evaluating prototypes, rigs or fixtures to inform design decisions and reduce technical risk
  • Experience authoring clear technical documentation, such as test reports, design reviews or engineering change justifications
  • The ability to troubleshoot product issues, identify root causes and develop considered corrective actions
  • The ability to work effectively with cross-functional colleagues, communicating mechanical design decisions clearly and constructively.
It would also be beneficial if you have:
  • Exposure to, and an understanding of, the requirements of operating and developing in a regulated environment, ideally within medical devices under ISO 13485, ISO 14791 and/or IEC 60601
  • Practical experience supporting transfer-to-manufacture activities for parts and products
  • An understanding of, and practical experience producing, engineering drawings to BS 8888, ideally with additional knowledge of ISO 1101 Geometric Product Specification / GD&T
